However, after people raised their voices, another renowned WTA pro came forward to clear the air amid the confusion surrounding the intentions behind the move.

WTA legend Rosie Casals shared her thoughts on the decision to relocate the prestigious WTA Finals to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for the next three years. Casals highlighted the importance of understanding the motives behind such moves, clarifying that it involves dual perspectives.
“I think that you can look at it in two different ways. What are we doing there? They don’t respect women? It’s not an encouraging thing for us to be in there? Are we going there for money?“ she said, expressing concern over Saudi Arabia’s treatment of women. However, she accepted how the allure of financial incentives can undoubtedly play a part in decision-making.

“Yeah, of course. We’re going there for money. Let’s be honest. Okay, money talks! I don’t care whether it’s going to China or going to Saudi! Is that gonna be a good tournament? Yeah! Is there gonna be plenty of money? Yeah,“ she added. According to Casals, participating in tournaments held in countries like Saudi Arabia enables women athletes to display their strength and strive for better rewards.
She also highlighted the importance of visibility, suggesting that saying no to such events could hinder progress for women in sports. While acknowledging the potential benefits of hosting the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Casals highlighted the need for a balanced consideration of ethical concerns coupled with financial gains.
Martina Navratilova stands against the call for the WTA Finals
Tennis legend Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert were the first tennis legends to oppose the call to move the WTA Finals to Saudi Arabia. However, despite their denial, the decision went in the desired direction, and therefore, Navratilova denied her presence at the upcoming event.

“I’m not planning on that,” she said, upon being asked about her plans for the year-end event. Along with that, she also mentioned how the decision was finally a call from the players. “Chris Evert and I have made our views clear on that, but the players have made their choices,“ the WTA legend added.
As the event still finds itself surrounded by a debate revolving around the intentions, what matters is how it turns out and what benefits it brings to the players.
