Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek faced a rather confusing question before Wimbledon. Before attending a slam where she has her worst winning percentage, this world’s number-one WTA star fell victim to a journalist’s lack of awareness. As Swiatek prepares for the slam where she wants to get “better and better,” she was baffled by a moment she faced recently. Showing her humble side of the character, Swiatek wins hearts with her assuring message to the question.

Christopher Clarey, author with the New York Times, shared the bizarre moment from Iga Swiatek’s recent Wimbledon press conference. A reporter asked whether Swiatek hopes “to play in the Olympics in the future,” given that she is “not playing the Olympics this time around.” This question amused Swiatek as she qualified just two days ago for the games in Paris. “I’m not playing Olympics? I am playing, for sure,” replied the world number 1.

Although a troubling question to come from a reporter who will ask players questions throughout the two weeks of the tournament, with several players dropping out, they likely assumed that Iga Swiatek was another one to miss. Aryna Sabalenka and Ons Jabeur are the top 10 WTA players who will not be participating in the Summer Olympics. 

Swiatek’s psychologist, Daria Abramowicz, was quick enough to respond to the tweet, showing her dissatisfaction over the journalist’s lack of knowledge. “Interesting? Who asked this brilliant question?” commented Abramowicz.

The Olympics has always been special for Swiatek, given her father’s participation and performance in the event. Since she also attended the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, she will appear at the event this year to attain a medal this time.

Tomasz Swiatek, Iga’s father, represented their country in the Quadruple Sculls Rowing in the men’s division in the Seoul Olympics in 1988. Swiatek’s talented father came seventh, making Poland incredibly proud. Given her father’s association with the event, Swiatek felt “Olympics are the most important event probably in sports overall.” She further shared how “winning any medal would be a dream come true.”

Expressing how much the Olympics matter to Swiatek, she further revealed her first experience in this important sports event. “In Tokyo, I remember how stressful it was. This year I’m trying to really keep my expectations low but really work hard to be prepared for the Olympics.”

Despite the baffling question about her participation, the world number 1 is excited to compete this year. With a medal slipping from her hands in 2021, Iga has become a new player altogether. With the Olympics taking place on her favorite surface, where she has won 4 out of her 5 slams, a medal is likely guaranteed in her near future.
