“I’m a little bit in shock right now,” said Coco Gauff. It was the 2022 French Open. American tennis sensation Coco Gauff had never been past the quarterfinals of the Grand Slams before that event. But in that edition, Gauff showed the tennis world why she would be among the hottest prospects in the coming years as she made it to her maiden Grand Slam final, winning all her 12 sets en route. Although she lost in the summit clash against Iga Swiatek, it was a taste of what to expect from Gauff. Fast forward to 2025, Gauff’s name is doing the rounds as one of the favorites to lift the title this time around.

Talking about the women’s singles event, Iga Swiatek has claimed a hat-trick of titles here at Roland Garros. She is the defending champion in Paris and is certainly a contender to defend her title. However, her recent form has been a major cause of worry, and she has slipped to Number 5 in the WTA rankings. Thus, Gauff’s name was everywhere when it came to the predictions for the women’s singles champion at the French Open.

Before the start of the tournament, the ATP players were asked to pick out their predictions for the women’s singles champion at Roland Garros. A majority of the players picked Gauff to win her maiden French Open title. Reasoning out why he picked Gauff, Casper Ruud said, “Coco had a great run in Madrid. She reached the finals, she played well, trying to get the title.” Other players like Ben Shelton, Tommy Paul, and Taylor Fritz also predicted Gauff to win the French Open this year, given her dominant form of late.

Going into this year’s French Open, Gauff is on cloud 9 after some amazing performances. She reached back-to-back finals in Madrid and Rome and looks in great touch recently. Last year, she bowed out of the French Open in the semifinals and would look to better her performance this time around.

Interestingly, Gauff isn’t only the favorite pick among the ATP stars. Even some tennis experts picked Gauff to win this year’s French Open title.

Owing to her brilliant form of late, Gauff has risen to the second spot in the WTA rankings. Moreover, the 2025 French Open presents a brilliant opportunity for Gauff not only to win her maiden title at Roland Garros but also to narrow the gap with Aryna Sabalenka at the top of the WTA rankings. Thus, tennis expert D’Arcy Maine felt that Gauff would have extra motivation to win the title.

She said, “Gauff. She has proved just how good she can be on clay in the past and had strong results at Roland Garros previously, but it feels like she’s better than ever on the surface with a 10-2 record in the month of May alone. She reached the final in Madrid with straight-sets victories over Mirra Andreeva and Belinda Bencic, and then absolutely dismantled Swiatek 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals.”

Further, she went on to add, “Gauff then went on to reach the Italian Open final, with wins over Andreeva, Emma Raducanu and Zheng Qinwen (in over three and a half hours!) along the way. She has come away trophy-less in Europe so far this season but that should change in Paris.”
