Alexis Ohanian, Serena Williams’ husband, is widely recognized as a strong advocate for women in sports. The American entrepreneur who made his fortune online, has invested in women’s soccer by owning Angel City FC.

The 39-year-old has spoken publicly about how Serena and Olympia motivated him to root for women’s sports. Furthermore, he thinks women’s sports deserve the same level of attention and appreciation as men’s. Recently, Alexis Ohanian ridiculed America’s men’s soccer team over the women’s team’s excellence.

Recently, Alexis Ohanian was part of the annual Salute to Women in Sports event. He was honored with the Champion for Equality Award at this year’s New York City. The American, during his winning speech, ridiculed America’s men’s soccer team over the women’s team’s excellence and voiced, “So here was the sport women’s soccer. We’re thankfully thanks to the amazing work of so many. The women’s soccer is the greatest on the planet. It’s the greatest in the world.” 

He further stated, “It has been for decades, and when the average American thinks of American soccer greatness, they’re probably thinking of Chastain kicking that penalty kick, tearing off her shirt, and celebrating. They’re not thinking of a man doing it because, frankly, we have not been great.“

The United States Women’s National Team is well recognized as a perennial powerhouse in international women’s soccer. In fact, the team played a pivotal role in the 1990s boom in soccer’s popularity in the United States. Moreover, in 1996, USWNT captain and all-star midfielder, Julie Foudy, reached out to none other than Billie Jean King to help with the issue of pay equity.

The American entrepreneur’s soccer team recently broke the NWSL attendance record of 30,000 with a sellout crowd of 32,000 when they played against San Diego FC.

He further announced that the money raised from the auction of players’ shirts would be contributed to a social cause. Alexis has been an outspoken advocate for women’s sports ever since he married Serena Williams and started Angel City FC.
