When Garbine Muguruza announced her retirement last year, she left the tennis world shocked, as she was just 30 and still a force to reckon with on the tour. However, she was tired of handling the constant pressure to deliver and being judged by the tennis world. Additionally, she wanted to move to the next phase of her life and spend quality time with her family. More than a year later, it looks like she made the right decision as she announced an exciting update, which was cheered on by the likes of Aryna Sabalenka and other tennis stars.

Back in October 2024, Muguruza married model and businessman Arthur Borges, whom she met in New York while at the US Open in 2021. After marrying last year, one year later, Muguruza announced that she was pregnant. The Spanish star shared a series of polaroids, including of her baby bump on her Instagram handle. “Familia,” Muguruza captioned the post, as she couldn’t wait to see what the next chapter in her life brings.

Meanwhile, toward the end of her career, Muguruza struggled with injuries. She had to miss several tournaments and had an on-and-off time on the court. Moreover, her form took a downturn and failed to deliver performances consistently. With an aim to focus on her personal life, she gave up the sport and once revealed how she felt after calling time on her career prematurely.

Will Garbine Muguruza make a comeback to tennis?

Even after her retirement, the Spaniard couldn’t stay away from the sport. She was seen commentating in the matches and following the sport from close range. Well, her love for tennis couldn’t keep her away from it. However, when asked if she would ever think about getting back on the court, Muguruza had an interesting response.

She said, “At the beginning, I never thought that I was going to come back here so quickly. I was like, ‘Okay, I’m retiring. Bye everybody!’ But only for a little bit, you know? Like, I don’t want to see a tennis ball for maybe three, four years. But then, I don’t know. I think that tennis wants me back! And this—it’s what I know. It’s a part of me; it’s in my heart. So I’m happy to be here again.”

However, with her responsibilities set to rise, it is unlikely that Muguruza will make a comeback in the professional world of tennis. For now, she’ll enjoy her pregnancy phase and can’t wait to embrace motherhood.
