Coco Gauff is often a subject of criticism, but she has a long list of strong supporters. One of them is Andy Roddick. Emphasizing the unique pressure Gauff faces, Roddick expressed his frustration with the harsh scrutiny surrounding her, offering a candid look at the reality of the tennis world.

Gauff surprised the tennis fraternity by clinching her first WTA Tour Finals title in Riyadh, a comeback that has been turning heads. Following her title defense loss at Flushing Meadows, Gauff showed impressive growth, winning the 2024 China Open, reaching the semifinals of the 2024 Wuhan Open, and ultimately claiming her WTA Finals debut title. This breakthrough, however, came with its share of challenges. Gauff faced substantial criticism for her double-fault errors and issues with her forehand. Yet, she persevered, rising to the WTA no. three ranking in November. While her recent triumph has brought widespread praise, it wasn’t long before she received harsh comments about her form. Veteran and former ATP Number one Andy Roddick recently offered his take on the scrutiny surrounding Gauff’s performance.

Since Gauff arrived on tour, she faced criticism for her service and forehand. She served 35 double-fault errors in the 2024 Italian Open with an average of 10 double-faults in five matches. In addition, she had 50 unforced errors against Yulia Putintseva in the same tournament. Gauff’s 19 double-fault errors against Emma Navarro in the 2024 US Open forced her to exit the tournament. After that, her talent was questioned by the fraternity leaving her into the pool of criticism.

Speaking on his Served podcast, Roddick addressed the unfair criticism, saying, “Let’s backtrack before we all pretend that it was the most obvious thing that she was going to win the WTA Finals right? Cause, Coco [Gauff] is now at the point in her career where if things go badly the criticism comes faster, and when she does well it’s like yeah, obviously we all knew. No, no, no, don’t do that, that’s not fair, that’s not right. All criticizing! All are concerned about the serve, the forehand, the defense at the US Open and how she went out against Emma Navarro. The one thing we always forget or at least don’t have in top of mind that Coco, she is twenty! she is twenty-years-old, win WTA Tour Finals, beats couple of players that are anyway good, Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka.”

Roddick reminded that, despite the critiques surrounding Gauff’s forehand and double fault errors and her loss to Emma Navarro at the US Open, she is still only 20 years old. He pointed out that Gauff’s WTA Finals victory—where she defeated top players like Iga Świątek and Aryna Sabalenka—underscores her exceptional talent. His remarks reflect an admiration for Gauff’s achievements and a call to ease the constant scrutiny she faces. For Roddick, the focus should be on celebrating her brilliance, rather than fixating on her setbacks.

The former ATP star has always been fair about his judgments on Coco Gauff. He saw great potential in Gauff and she proved it by winning the title in Riyadh as the youngest player after Maria Sharapova in 2004. Her incredible act of turning the table assured Roddick of more milestones in the future as he predicted big for the former US Open winner.

Andy Roddick delivers a hopeful prediction about Coco Gauff’s 2025 season

In the same podcast episode, the former ATP star highlighted Gauff’s remarkable resilience, noting that setbacks hadn’t diminished her determination to excel. “She didn’t let those linger through the rest of 2024; she handled them, got through it,” Roddick said, praising Gauff’s ability to rebound from challenging moments. He added, “When you have a 1-11 record against someone, getting that win against Iga Swiatek—where it’s been traditionally a very hard matchup, probably her toughest matchup on tour—wonders for confidence. There’s not as much scar tissue from 2024; she’s almost deleted all of it, and I think she’s prepped for a massive year next year.”  Roddick had full faith in Gauff. He once said in his podcast, “I think the rest of her game has become so much better than it was a year ago that she will self-correct the [yips] at some point, I have full faith. I think she is committed to it, she is a hard worker.”
