Long before Azzi Fudd became a WNBA star, she was learning from two of her biggest role models at home. Her parents, Katie and Tim Fudd, both former standout college basketball players, shaped every stage of her journey. They served as her first coaches, teaching discipline, navigating the recruiting process, and providing the stability and support that helped her thrive in college before reaching the professional ranks.

Who is Azzi Fudd’s father, Tim Fudd? 

Tim Fudd is a former professional basketball player, collegiate standout high school coach, and the adoptive father of WNBA star Azzi Fudd. Standing 6-foot-7, he built a lifelong career centered around athletic development, coaching, and public operations.

He is a native of Falls Church, Virginia. Fudd played Division I basketball at American University from 1991 to 1996. He completed his collegiate career ranked 12th on the school’s all-time scoring list and twice won All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) honors. During the 1993–94 season, he led the entire conference in scoring with 20.0 points per game.

After graduating with a degree in business administration, Fudd played professional basketball overseas in Europe, wearing No. 35 during his international tenure.

He has spent over two decades coaching at the grassroots, high school, and collegiate levels. He served as an assistant coach at Longwood University, co-founded the NOVA Select AAU Club, and worked as an assistant varsity coach for the girls’ basketball program at St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C. 

He is not only a veteran in basketball but also works full time in public service as a government operations and program management leader for the Fairfax County Government in Virginia. He also hosts a sports-centric podcast.

Who is Azzi Fudd’s mother, Katie Smrcka-Duffy Fudd? 

Just like her husband, Katie is also a former standout college basketball player. She is also a WNBA draft pick and youth basketball coach. Recognized as an elite guard in her own right, she established a legendary scoring reputation long before coaching her daughter into the professional ranks.

Katie was an elite guard who amassed over 2,000 points in her college career. She played for NC State, where she was named the 1997 ACC Rookie of the Year, before transferring to Georgetown University.

In 2001, she was selected with the 62nd overall pick by the Sacramento Monarchs. Though injuries cut her professional playing career short, she remains a pioneering figure for Georgetown women’s basketball.

In March 2026, she was officially inducted into the Big East Legends class for her historic collegiate achievements. She currently works alongside her husband, Tim, as a player development specialist and head coach for the GTS Fusion youth AAU team.

What are Azzi Fudd’s parents’ ethnicities and nationalities? 

Katie and Tim Fudd come from different ethnic backgrounds, giving Azzi a richly diverse family heritage. Katie Smrcka-Duffy is a white American of Caucasian descent, while Tim Fudd, her adoptive father, is an African American. Both are American by nationality.

Azzi has often spoken about how proud she is of her family’s diversity. “I mean, all of us look like we come from a different family,” she once said. Her mother, Katie, is white with red hair, while Tim is Black. Her brothers, Jon and Jose, trace their roots to Guatemala and have brown skin. “But,” Azzi added, “that’s something I love about the way we look.”

Katie, who was a single mother, married Tim when Azzi was a toddler, and he formally adopted her soon afterward. Tim’s mother, Georgia Hecker, frequently fostered children at her home outside Atlanta, and Azzi initially knew Jon and Jose more like cousins than brothers. Over time, however, they formed a close sibling bond, united by their shared love for their family’s diverse cultural heritage and their passion for basketball.

How did Azzi Fudd’s parents influence her basketball career?

Azzi’s parents were not only her full supporters as mom and dad but also her mentors. They taught her everything important about basketball.  Katie taught Azzi the mechanics of her elite shooting stroke from childhood. Azzi has explicitly credited her, stating: “They’re the reason I’m playing basketball… They taught me most of the things I know, so shout-out Mom and Dad.”, as noted by People Magazine.

While at a USA Basketball tryout in her youth, Katie was so profoundly moved by Olympic gold medalist Jennifer Azzi’s character and skill that she vowed to name her future daughter after her, setting a standard of excellence before Azzi was even born.

When Azzi suffered multiple severe injuries (including torn ACLs) during her high school and UConn careers, Katie’s own experience with career-altering injuries allowed her to guide Azzi through rehab and maintain her elite form.

Tim was also a huge catalyst behind Azzi’s success. In a Father’s Day tribute highlighted by ESPNW, Azzi beautifully summarized his impact: “My dad’s support means everything to me. He comes to all my games, was my coach growing up, helped start my love for basketball, and helped show me what it means to be a great teammate, a great player, and a great person. So, happy Father’s Day, Dad. I love you, and I wouldn’t be who I am without you.”

Between Katie’s firsthand experience and Tim’s constant presence as a coach and father, Azzi was surrounded by mentors who prepared her for every challenge. It’s no surprise she developed into one of basketball’s brightest stars.
