Why was Sevgi Uzun Waived by the Phoenix Mercury?

Uzun is a vital part of the Turkish team that is set to participate in the 2025 FIFA Women’s EuroBasket that will be held in Czechia, Germany, Italy, and Greece from 18 to 29 June 2025. Because of this, she will miss four or possibly five games of the WNBA, and the Mercury can’t afford to have a player down for that long. So, although this is not a confirmed reason from the franchise, this is probably why the franchise had to waive her.

A Look at Sevgi Uzun’s College and Professional Career

Sevgi Uzun likely attended a local college in Turkey while growing up there, and her record there is unknown, but it must have been impressive, as she joined one of the most dominant Turkish clubs, Besiktas, in 2013. She played there for five years until 2018 and then played at Çukurova Basketbol for a year. She moved to Fenerbahçe from 2019 to 2021 and played for Ormanspor for a year.

Uzun’s career took a significant leap during the 2022–2023 season when she joined Botaş SK, a smaller club compared to her previous teams. The move allowed her to step into a leading role for the first time in her professional career. At Botaş, Uzun delivered a breakout performance, averaging 15.6 points, 7.4 assists, and 34.5 minutes per game in the Turkish league. She mirrored this production in EuroCup Women, showcasing her ability to perform on the European stage as well.

Her outstanding season earned her a return to Fenerbahçe, one of Europe’s elite clubs, where she previously played in a more limited role. Unlike her earlier stint, Uzun entered the 2023–2024 season as the starting point guard, averaging 21.8 minutes per game in EuroLeague Women, a major step forward in responsibility and visibility. That earned her a call-up to the WNBA for the Dallas Wings, where she started 19 games out of 30 while averaging 4.4 points and 3.0 assists per game. She was part of a 3-team trade, also including the Indiana Fever, in which Mercury received Satou Sabally and Kalani Brown along with her. In 7 WNBA games recently with the Mercury, she averaged 1.6 points and 2.0 assists, playing 14.6 minutes per game.
