Known for her versatility on the court and her advocacy off it, Satou Sabally is a German-American professional basketball player. Born in New York to a Gambian father and a German mother, Sabally was taken to Gambia when she was just two years old. But shortly after, the family moved again — this time to Berlin, where she began her schooling.
And from that point on, Germany became her home. It’s where she discovered basketball and began playing at a young age. Sabally later moved to the U.S. to play collegiate basketball at the University of Oregon, before being selected as the second overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft by the Dallas Wings. Since then, she’s racked up an impressive list of accolades — from WNBA All-Star selections to the 2023 Most Improved Player award. You name it, she’s earned it.

But her off-court journey is just as powerful. Sabally is widely recognized for her fashion sense, activism, and deep commitment to social causes. Just to give you an idea, in 2023, she was voted the WNBA’s Most Stylish Player by GQ Sports readers. That same flair and confidence even landed her endorsement deals with major brands like Jordan and Adidas.
She’s also served on the WNBA’s Social Justice Council and partnered with organizations like UNICEF. It’s clear that her experiences growing up biracial in different countries have fueled her passion for advocacy and justice.

Born in New York City but raised in Germany, Sabally brings both Gambian and German descent, offering a rich multicultural perspective to her life and career. As far as her religion is concerned, there’s no information available online.
However, there’s a good chance she might be a follower of Islam. According to a Wikipedia report, her name “Isatou” is that of her father’s sister, and it is derived from Aisha, one of the wives of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. So, there may be a link between the two. Still, it isn’t her religion or ethnicity that defines her personality — rather, it’s something she fell in love with early on.

Satou Sabally’s basketball journey began in the most ordinary of places — a local playground in Germany. At just 9 years old, she was spotted by a local coach who saw potential in her raw talent. From that moment on, she started attending practices regularly and quickly stood out — not just for her skills, but because she was the only girl on her youth team.
By 2012, her game had already started to mature. She joined Berlin’s TuS Lichterfelde, a club competing in Germany’s second-tier women’s basketball league, and played there until 2015. After finishing her sophomore year of high school, Sabally made a big move — relocating from Berlin to Freiburg to attend the Rotteck Gymnasium, a school known for supporting young athletes.
There, her basketball career took another leap. She joined Eisvögel USC Freiburg, a professional team competing in the top-tier Damen-Basketball-Bundesliga, and played from 2015 to 2017. But even as she played at the highest domestic level, Sabally had her eyes set on something bigger — college basketball in the United States. To keep her NCAA eligibility intact, she made the tough but strategic decision to forgo a salary and maintain her amateur status.
And then she committed to W to make a significant impact, which she obviously did make!
