While fans anticipated the 2025 regular games to include a spicier version of the Caitlin Clark vs Angel Reese rivalry, the Indiana Fever flipped the script. Ironically, the Indiana Fever and the Connecticut Sun emerged as #1 rivals this season. Each time the teams clashed, they defined what actual rivalry looks like. After all, WNBA officials interfered to eject the players in the final quarter and imposed fines on all players involved. But this did not stop the teams from snubbing each other the wrong way. Remember the last incident where Olivia Nelson-Ododa purposely elbowed Sophie Cunningham, leading her to fall mid-game? And Sophie is knee-deep in trouble. Again.

The Mohegan Sun Arena was fired up as the two formidable teams stepped in for the last game of the series today. But what happened in the first half was heart-wrenching for the Fever locker room and fans alike. In a bid to make a bucket, Sun’s Bria Hartley came crashing down on Indiana Fever athletes. While she elbowed a Fever defender away from the rim, unfortunately, Cunningham had to take the brunt.

With no landing space under the rim, Hartley fell directly on Cunningham. Unfortunately, the contact was forceful and Cunningham can be seen clutching right knee to her chest. While the game continued, Cunningham could be seen on the floor, writhing in pain during the second quarter. Moreover, national reporter for the Connecticut Sun, Emily Adams provided a fresh update regarding the star.

“Cunningham helped to the locker room limping heavily, really heartbreaking for this Fever team that has been absolutely killed by injuries. Just lost McDonald and Colson a week ago to season-ending injuries,” reporter Emily Adams posted on X. “I think the Fever now have just three active guards.”

Despite running low on a point guard presence, Cunningham’s brutal on-court injury fuels trouble for the Fever. While HC Stephanie White & Co. recently introduced Chloe Bibby, Odyssey Sims, and Kyra Lambert under hardship contracts, it will be crucial to determine whether the three newcomers can rally the team towards a victory against the toughest opponents. With Cunningham being sidelined mid-game, can Indiana Fever carve a spot in the playoffs? Guess, we’ll have to wait and watch.

The Connecticut Sun establish a stronghold over Indiana Fever

The Connecticut Sun has been radiant today. An overwhelming welcome to Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White and assistant coach Briann January during the pregame indicated a warm gesture towards the opponents. But what happened in the pregame led fans to wonder if it was a facade to bring down Fever’s guard. Or so it seemed.

While the Indiana Fever was dominating from the beginning with Odyssey Sims’ two-pointer against the Sun, Aneesah Morrow’s two-pointer set the Sun a point ahead with 5-4. But that was just the tip of the iceberg. After Bria Hartley’s heavy contact against the Indiana Fever athlete in the first half sent Sophie Cunningham to the sidelines, the Fever lost one of its reliant athletes mid-game.

And just like that, the Sun took over their opponents, dominating them in the first half. They successfully grabbed the lead and scored 24-11 against the Fever, who struggled massively to overcome the turnovers and poor passes against the visibly aggressive roster. But this wasn’t it.

The Fever spiralled in the second quarter after Cunningham’s sudden injury. As Kelsey Mitchell struggled to find her rhythm, the Sun took the advantage and stung their opponents with another 24-18 lead, heading into the third quarter. With the Indiana Fever already faltering towards a loss in the final game against the Connecticut Sun, this loss can lead to severe consequences for the franchise this season.
