Sophie Cunningham has given her opinion on the Caitlin Clark-Stephanie White heated verbal exchange that has turned the community into a debate room. While some analysts have rallied against Clark for her behavior, others have lashed out at White. Surprisingly, however, Cunningham isn’t completely aligned with Clark on her stance: ‘not condoning’ but defending competitive intent.

“It was all out of like, good intent of winning the same thing,” Cunningham said on her Show Me Something podcast. “And like at the end of the day, we were not playing good. I’m not condoning her actions. I think there’s room to grow in how you respond to things. But she would say the same thing. Her and Steph are fine.”

“Later that night or the next morning, they hugged and talked about it. Like when you are in high competitive situations, pretty much four days out of the week, stuff is going to happen. But like, I said, our staff is just under a microscope, and everything you do, everything you say is going to a highlight reel for someday.”

Cunningham’s assessment makes complete sense, given the team and, specifically, Clark’s performance. Foul trouble derailed Clark’s night: 5 fouls in 22 minutes forced her to the bench, finishing with just 6 points and 6 assists. She missed multiple shots and was hunted on defense.

The fouls stacked up, leading to White’s aggressive response on the sideline. Clark wasn’t a passive listener; she fired back at White, fueling the exchange.

This is where Cunningham feels Clark could have done much better, though she clearly isn’t entirely blaming her. And to be honest, she isn’t the only one. Speaking at the latest episode of the Post Moves podcast, WNBA legend Candace Parker also echoed the same sentiment regarding Clark’s outrageous reaction.

“Now, from Caitlin’s standpoint, you got to take it, right?” Parker said. “Like, you got to say, ‘Hey, maybe I wasn’t right, or maybe I didn’t handle it that way. I’m going to handle it better in the future.’ But I do think a lot was made of it.”

Clark’s reaction fueled tension. Narratives on social media weaponized it into a feud, with rumors of a negative equation between Caitlin Clark and Stephanie White trending on social media after that heated exchange.

While in reality, it was just two “competitive” people having a conversation for the betterment of the team. The narratives were sensationalized to the point that some analysts even claimed the Indiana Fever could move away from White as their head coach after her incident with Clark.

“I think the media loves to create division when there’s not always division,” Cunningham said of the rumors. “So, it’s two competitive people who want to win at a high level. And I think that’s really all it was.”

After constant chatter around Clark and White’s heated exchange, the duo settled their differences during the Atlanta game. In the third quarter, when Clark was on a phenomenal scoring run, she approached the bench and even gave the Fever head coach a chest bump.

It was a statement against these negative narratives, establishing that they share a perfect coach-player relationship. And subsequently, this gesture also caught the notice of the hoops community.

WNBA Analyst Reacts to Caitlin Clark and Stephanie White’s Gesture During the Atlanta Game

Before the Atlanta game, Clark had already addressed the exchange in a presser.

“I ride for Steph. I ride for these girls. Steph has my back more than anybody,” Clark had said in a pre-game presser.

While her statements weren’t enough, Clark’s gesture towards White in the Atlanta game clearly should put the doubters to rest. Speaking of this chest bump and Clark’s repeated assessment, Robin Lundberg shared a clear-cut assessment on his YouTube channel.

“I hope people would listen to Caitlin Clark a little bit instead of making stuff up,” Lundberg said. “There was also this video, which won’t go viral, of course, like it’s not drama, anger, and anxiety, but two people who were happy with the situation and the circumstances in the game.”

At the end of the day, competitiveness is a part and parcel of any sport. But the resulting aggression shouldn’t be carried forward to the locker room or the next day in the gym. And that’s what Caitlin Clark and Stephanie White have established through their gestures.

Meanwhile, the Indiana Fever also improved their record to 5-4 after the Atlanta win. They will try to extend their winning streak with their game against the New York Liberty on Saturday at the Barclays Center.
