For most rookies, their first WNBA games take adjustment. They need time to tune themselves into a different sort of physicality and pace. But none of it seems to affect this season’s #2 overall pick, Olivia Miles. Miles is making noise this season: she has broken a Caitlin Clark record in her latest game against the Dallas Wings, prompting one of her teammates to double down on her skills.

In her first three WNBA games, Miles has recorded 49 points and 21 assists. This puts her in a list that features players like Clark, Sue Bird, Candace Parker, and Nikki McCray. Speaking in a post-game press conference after Miles’ third game of the season, veteran teammate Courtney Williams heaped praise on the rookie.

“Oh man, it’s been a ball, like I’ve been saying, I’m just happy to kind of be back at my natural position, and she’s doing a hell of a job,” Williams said. “She’s the captain of the ship, so for her to be a rookie coming in and doing what she’s doing, psh that girl gonna be a problem, I’ve been sayin it.”

In her last two seasons with the Minnesota Lynx, Williams was largely deployed as the team’s field general. Of course, it’s a shift from her regular shooting guard position, in which she excels. But none of it hindered her production.

Playing as the point guard, Williams also set the record for the most assists by a Lynx player last season. She dished out 271 assists in the regular season at just over 6 per game. But with Olivia Miles’ arrival, she returned to being the shooting guard on the court, her natural position.

Notably, this isn’t the first time that Williams has echoed this sentiment. In an interview a few days ago, the 10-year veteran expressed something similar, calling Miles a “baby Chelsea Gray” and comparing her to one of the best PGs in the league.

“I mean, she’s a little killer, aye man, I said “look, let me move out your way”… happy to have her, happy to be back at my natural position and she out here killing it man, like I said this little joker here is like a baby Chelsea Gray, like she gonna be cold, she gonna be so cold. I’m excited to just be a part of the journey,” she had said.

Courtney Williams’ praise for Miles isn’t coming in isolation. As the point guard of the team, Miles has done quite a formidable job in her short tenure so far. In the three games so far, Miles has racked up 21 assists, which is the fourth highest after those many games for a rookie in the history of the league.

Even in the game against the Dallas Wings, we saw flashes of that skill set, where she recorded a team-high 6 assists.

But Miles’ game isn’t just about playmaking and dishing out assists. She’s an equally formidable scorer. In the three games, Miles has averaged over 16 points per game while shooting nearly 50% from the field. Furthermore, Miles’ addition also adds an entirely new dynamic with Courtney Williams.

For instance, with Miles taking over the PG role, Williams isn’t bound to be the team’s playmaker. She can use those skills in flashes, but it just frees her primary ability as an efficient shooter.

It was quite prevalent in the Dallas Wings game, where Williams shouldered the team with 21 points and 5 rebounds, while Miles handled the playmaking, adding 15 points, as the Minnesota Lynx clinched a 90-86 tightrope game.

Notably, Courtney Williams wasn’t the only one to heap praise on Olivia Miles after the game. A former four-time WNBA champion also chimed in with her in that regard.

Olivia Miles Can Be on Another Caitlin Clark List, Feels Cynthia Cooper

With Miles’ numbers and assists have already put her in Caitlin Clark’s company, four-time WNBA champion Cynthia Cooper has remarked that the former can also win the 2026 WNBA Rookie of the Year, an award that CC won back in 2024.

“My Rookie of the Year, I’ve got to go with Olivia Miles,” Cooper said while speaking on WNBA Nightcap on Prime. “We’re only three games, but I’ve got to go with Olivia. Because guess what? She has shown leadership, scoring, and the ability to make players around her better.”

Cooper’s assessment is accurate. With Olivia Miles taking over the PG position, the Lynx have been quite formidable. They have won 2 of their 3 games so far, even without their franchise player, Napheesa Collier. Thus, Miles is one of the frontrunners for the award, given the numbers she’s producing this season.

But she will face some major competition as well. Flau’jae Johnson, for instance, has made quite an impact with the Seattle Storm. She’s averaging 11.7 points per game and 4.7 rebounds. The numbers are quite impressive, but for now, Miles is quite clear in this race.

The season-end is still a long way. For now, we’ll have to play the waiting game to see if Olivia Miles can bag that coveted WNBA Rookie of the Year award. But to do it, she’ll have to keep racking up numbers consistently in the season.
