If there’s one thing people will remember about the 2025 WNBA season, it’s the never-ending injury reports- it felt like no team escaped untouched. But at the top of that unfortunate list? The Indiana Fever. Five season-ending injuries, including two of their biggest stars, Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham, derailed what once looked like a promising title chase. While the Fever’s championship hopes faded, fans have been holding onto one question: How’s Sophie doing? Well, after months of silence, there’s finally an update- and it’s straight from Sophie herself.

Speaking with Wilson on the recent episode of “Show Me Something,” Sophie was asked about her injury. To which she replied, “I kind of let myself get out of that cast without a doctor’s order. But I had my checkup and they’re like, ‘you’re progressing really well and you look awesome….I can bend it past where they even want it but it’s not equivalent to my other leg.'”

Her injury came on August 17th, during Indiana’s matchup with the Connecticut Sun. Early in the second quarter, Sophie rotated over to help defend Bria Hartley’s drive. But in the blink of an eye, disaster struck- Hartley crashed down directly onto Sophie’s right leg. The pain was instant and visible, her face twisting in agony as she hit the court.

And you could see Sophie’s face twist as she went down. “I’m like, Holy s—“shared Stephanie White back then. And, yes, what followed was drama as even Sophie’s sister vented about the refs’ officiating. But the damage was done.

Sophie didn’t return to the court, and later she was diagnosed with an MCL tear. She underwent surgery to get it fixed and has been recovering since then. But, as Juju, despite recovering from an ACL that she suffered last year, had to miss out on the 2025-26 season as advised by her trainers, will Sophie be the next? No. As she said, “It’s good.”

It’s an MCL, a key stabilizing ligament located on the inner side of the knee that tears. It typically takes 3–5 months to repair, and considering the level of progress Sophie’s showing, it doesn’t look like she’s going to miss the upcoming season. Though, we might not see her at Unrivaled if she gets to ink a deal.

“I’m to the point now that like, I’m ready to kind of get back lifting weights and like moving…like I’m good to go, you know, and that doesn’t really happen to me very often. So that’s good,” she added. But this isn’t the first time Sophie’s shown steady recovery. After one week of surgery, Sophie turned heads by sharing a post on Instagram.

She posted a mirror selfie while writing that she’s doing okay post her knee surgery. She even had her hand close to her mouth, to show lavender-colored nails she got done with—yes, a huge smile. And, she paired it with the caption, “Starting to feel like me again, so y’all better watch tf out…”

While the message was clear, she made it even more valuable by posting another photo where she was reclining outside in the sun by the pool. She had her leopard print swimsuit on, with her arms raised in a relaxing manner. Simply put, you just can’t ignore how she’s recovering while having fun. But, honestly, it wasn’t easy for her!

A positive attitude had helped Sophie Cunningham

Last month, when Sophie got injured, it wasn’t just an MCL tear she had to fight through. She even had various health issues, including painful bowel movements. All of this came after she had her surgery, though, with a positive attitude, her body showed positive signs too.

“I need to start taking laxatives…I have literally just been inhaling food and nothing’s come out,” she told Wilson during last month’s episode of Show Me Something. She even unveiled that it was the medicines she took during surgery that were the reason behind her digestive problems.

The doctors switched her painkillers post-surgery, and the real challenge came for her. As she explained, the hardest part was swallowing the pills.

Later, she realized that it was the painkillers that caused her gastrointestinal complications. But, as she posted every time, she’s happy—she nailed it all. Now, she’s in the later phase of her recovery, where we might soon see her hitting weights in the gym. What do you think? Will she be back to help Fever for the next season?
