Sophie Cunningham wasn’t exactly ready to take a swing. But when she finally did-after some convincing-she went full “Happy Gilmore.” Then came the shout: “Man down!” She had accidentally hit an older man. His wife, however, walked away laughing, armed with an autograph, a picture, and a golf ball from Sophie. She even said, “It was worth it.” Hilarious. But does this moment mean Sophie should know her golfing limits?

Not really. In fact, the Indiana Fever guard is already onto her next golf outing. On the November 19 episode of Show Me Something, Cunningham admitted, “You know, the weird thing about it is like I know I hit someone, but I think I have some potential… my golf game.” She added, “I think me, her (CC) and Lexie are going to go and play a little bit more cuz we had fun. Like it was a blast… you got to meet so many cool people. Just a completely different vibe than basketball. It was cool.”

So that’s the plan. Her golf journey, which got a restart after a decade, as she requested joining Caitlin Clark’s Pro-Am appearance. When Clark announced she was playing, Sophie and Lexie immediately jumped into the comments. “@caitlinclark22 need a couple of caddies? @lexiehull 😏🍻.” Sophie penned, to which Lexie replied, “@sophie_cham sign us up!!!”

At first, it sounded like a joke. But the organizers loved it. Soon, the two Fever teammates were on the fairway beside Clark as her caddies. They joined a lineup of celebrity caddies that included Briana Scurry and Carson Hocevar.

Sophie definitely met plenty of interesting people at the event-yet she also became the star of a viral clip after her mis-hit knocked the “man down.” And if you ask her, she doesn’t mind the chaos at all. “I think Happy Gilmore would be really proud of me, so I’m feeling pretty good about my shot, to be honest,” she told Beth Ann Nichols of Golfweek last week. “I feel like the last time I hit a golf ball, I killed a squirrel, so I just don’t know if this is my scene, but I would like to win that car behind us.”

Fair enough-no one becomes Tiger Woods after one swing. And Sophie is no stranger to mistakes or learning from them. Just like when Clark hilariously corrected her for writing “FOUR” on her Instagram story after reposting her caddie moment. “I was like, ‘four, F-O-U-R! Like, heads up!’ But it’s ‘F-O-R-E.’ I didn’t know. I know I should’ve probably looked it up before I posted it all over my social media,” she told West Wilson.

She also admitted she’s good at drinking and driving the golf cart adding that her short game in putting is better than actually playing golf. So the girl’s learning curve is trending upward. Doesn’t matter even if it’s about the basics. And can we ignore that even Caitlin Clark started in the same chaotic way?

Sophie’s trying to take a page out of Caitlin Clark’s playbook

Last year, while playing in the Annika Pro-Am at Pelican Golf Club in Florida, Clark hit a terrible tee shot. A true shank-straight into the crowd. Or as some called it, a “violent errant pull.” While Sophie sprinted to the fan she hit, Clark simply pulled another ball from her pocket and teed it up again. She had already warned everyone: “Just going to try not to hit anyone standing outside of the ropes.”

But Clark isn’t a bad golfer. She hit several good shots that day. And coming into her second Pro-Am this season at Michael Jordan’s The Grove XXIII, she looked even better. Her front nine was shaky. She nearly slammed her club after a wild drive. One shot even ended up on a different fairway. Her frustration peaked when a long putt rolled straight back to her feet-twice.

Still, Caitlin found her rhythm on the back nine. She pumped her fist after a clean drive. She then drained a putt from 35 feet out. After a few messy swings, some good ones, Caitlin found her game. And now Sophie is following the same path. Both are learning. Both are swinging. And both are having a blast doing it.
