Picking a specific lineup from an array of all-time WNBA players is difficult beyond comprehension. After all, the league has been graced by multiple players who excel in the same position, making every choice difficult. But not for Paige Bueckers, who recently took even less than 30 seconds to spill out a lineup that would raise eyebrows.

“Imma go Sue (Bird), D (Diana Taurasi), Maya (Moore), Phee (Napheesa Collier), and A’ja (Wilson). So, many different ways I could go,” Bueckers said via USA Today Sports. “I went kind of with what I grew up watching, and, like, current greatness, but I could like the past OG legends. But that’s kind of what I went with this time.”

In the backcourt, she has named two of the greatest players that have graced the WNBA: Taurasi and Bird. Bird can adjust herself at the 1 in this lineup while Taurasi will take up the shooting guard position.

With a combined 7 WNBA titles and 11 Olympic medals, Bird and Taurasi also hold the league’s records for assists (3,234) and scoring (10,646 points), respectively. Beyond Bird and Taurasi, Bueckers also picked Moore for her frontcourt. A 4-time WNBA champion, Moore will help bring a defensive tenacity as well as a scoring spree to the small forward position of the lineup.

If you know Paige Bueckers, you’d expect Moore’s name to appear. Even last year, Bueckers echoed the same name when asked to choose her favorite player. “Probably Maya Moore,” the Wings guard said, according to Dallas’ WFAA.

Next up, Bueckers had two modern maestros who are undeniably carving their own path towards greatness. Both Collier and Wilson are absolute clutch frontcourt players and are the cornerstones of their respective franchises. Collier will take up the power forward position, while Wilson will grace herself at the 5.

Be it defending or offensive movements near the paint, the duo excels in almost every skill set on the basketball court to top off Bueckers’ Avengers team.

Given that the Wings guard plays against Collier and Wilson, she would have firsthand experience of the quality these players bring to the table. Thus, it just seems appropriate that Bueckers has included them as well to give the lineup a perfect mix of old-school and new-age players.

The interesting aspect of Paige Bueckers’ lineup is the versatility of the players she has chosen. For instance, all of these players are undoubtedly great scorers, but they share the same level of defensive tenacity. It makes the team tactically sound as a whole, and not just a product of imagination and greatness.

Notably, Bueckers’ choices largely reflect the UConn top-five lineup that she had named last year. She had named Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Maya Moore, and Napheesa Collier during Taurasi’s talk show “The Link”. The Dallas Wings guard just had Breanna Stewart in place of A’ja Wilson.

It might be a coincidence, but Paige Bueckers’ choices mirror the pride she takes in the UConn Huskies and their legendary players. Now, generally speaking, picking Stewart wouldn’t be a questionable choice either.

Stewart is as formidable a frontcourt player as you will ever see, excelling on both ends of the court. But in her latest assessment, Bueckers leaned towards Wilson, a three-time WNBA champion and a four-time league MVP. All in all, most of the names Bueckers had up her sleeve were mostly expected, but it’s largely contrasting to what one of her WNBA seniors did.

A’ja Wilson Also Tried Her Hand at Framing a WNBA All-Time Lineup Before Paige Bueckers

Two weeks before Bueckers’ interview, A’ja Wilson revealed her all-time lineup. But Wilson’s lineup reflected her unique perspective, contrasting with Bueckers’ picks.

“So, I got myself. I’m gonna go, coach Dawn Staley, I’mma go Lauren Jackson. I need a shooting guard. Give me DT (Diana Taurasi) at my two. I got so many options at the three, I’m just gonna go Sheryl (Swoopes),” she said.

Now, the choices are equally good as Bueckers, and the lineup is equally formidable. It leans more towards an old-school rotation, with Dawn Staley leading the charge at the point guard position. A Hall of Fame player, Staley’s name shouldn’t be much surprising.

Swoopes, a four-time WNBA champion, will grace the small forward position. Lauren Jackson, an Australian legend, will take over the power forward position. A five-time Olympic medalist, Jackson proved her mettle across leagues around the world, making her one of the most recognized women’s basketball players in the world.

Diana Taurasi and A’ja Wilson are the two rotation players most similar to Paige Bueckers’ choices at shooting guard and center, respectively. And to be honest, you can’t question it either, given their statures. Which team are you leaning towards between Bueckers and Wilson in all-time lineups? Do let us know in the comments.
