Paige Bueckers powered the Dallas Wings to a 96-91 win against the Chicago Sky. Bueckers erupted in the fourth quarter to help Dallas snatch the win. Yet, on a night when Bueckers became the third-youngest point guard in WNBA history to record at least 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 10 assists in a single game, she advocated for better representation, as this is the first time since 2020 that the WNBA doesn’t have a black woman as a head coach.

“I grew up with a lot of prominent Black women in my life that were very important to me, and how I was raised and how I grew up – being my stepmom, my AAU coach. So I understand how amazing they are,” she said in a clip posted by espnW.
“They should get the same equal opportunity as a white woman as a white man, to be an important piece of this league. And it was built on a lot of black women; this league was, so it’s definitely right for them to get the same equal opportunity as everybody else.”
Women of color in coaching positions have been a topic of discussion this season. After the Seattle Storm parted ways with Noelle Quinn following the 2025 season, the WNBA has been without a single Black female head coach. The league’s current black head coaches, Tyler Marsh and Sydney Johnson, are both men.

However, Paige Bueckers has spoken about representation since 2021. While accepting the ESPY Award for Best College Athlete in Women’s Sports, the former UConn star called attention to the lack of media coverage of Black women athletes, urging outlets to celebrate and amplify their stories.
Her latest comments also come just weeks after Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve voiced similar concerns.
“They say what should be the best person for the job, and we know that’s code,” Reeve said. “It doesn’t mean that we don’t want men or white men. It doesn’t mean that at all. We can’t have zero Black women coaching… I very much want to address that.”
That being said, while Bueckers took the opportunity to highlight equal representation, the Dallas Wings guard delivered a massive performance to bring the Wings’ win streak to 5.
Paige Bueckers reached a historic milestone against the Chicago Sky
While she didn’t take much credit for herself, Bueckers’ huge performance helped the Wings make up 10 points against the Chicago Sky late in the game to squeeze out the narrow win. Dallas coach Jose Fernandez praised his team for overcoming the pressure from Chicago’s offense in the third quarter.
“I think it’s our grit and our resilience. We don’t do it on purpose, but it’s something about the way we play that allows us to do some things really well in the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, we buckled down, got stops, secured rebounds, and made plays down the stretch.” Fernandez told the media.
Meanwhile, Paige Bueckers scrutinized the fact that they let Chicago get ahead by 10 points in the first place.
“It’s kind of become a habit for us to do that in the fourth, and that’s something we need to change by playing that way from the opening tip. We’re still continuing to find our identity. We’re not perfect, and tonight wasn’t even close to our best game.”
So, while Bueckers took the time to address an issue that was important to her, the Wings star is actually aware of the shortcoming her team needs to fix. Despite riding on a five-game win streak, the guard’s focus remains on elevating her team to the playoffs.
