Marina Mabrey’s move to the Toronto Tempo has worked perfectly. The veteran shooting guard’s career season for the franchise just became better in the last game against the LA Sparks, where she tied one of A’ja Wilson’s scoring records. Now, Mabrey has set her sights on becoming a WNBA All-Star.

Across her career, Mabrey has been a serial winner. The 29-year-old shooter has earned accolades worldwide, including winning the LBF and the WBBL and becoming the NCAA champion. Yet, when it comes to the WNBA, Mabrey has been devoid of the All-Star honor that every player in the league chases. The Toronto guard feels that this season can flip that conversation for her.
“I do, I think I have earned that honor,” Marina Mabrey said via ESPNW. “Like I said, it’s something out of your control. You hope to be that because you know because the little girl in you always wanted to be something like that, but it’s so much more about the validation, and I think this season I have really given myself a chance to shine.”
Marina Mabrey’s numbers reflect the entire story. As per WNBA.com, Mabrey is fourth in the points leaderboard, averaging 21.2 points per game. She is scoring above 40% from both the field and from the three-point line.
With Brittney Sykes, Mabrey anchors the offense of Toronto Tempo. A perfect testament to Mabrey’s offensive skill set came against the Los Angeles Sparks, when she took a shot at WNBA history. The shooting guard exploded for 53 points while scoring 17 of 28 from the field and 9 of 18 from beyond the arc, as per ESPN.
With that, Marina Mabrey tied Wilson and Liz Cambage’s record for most points in a single WNBA game with this performance, becoming just the fourth player in league history to score 50+ points.
“I mean, A’ja is the best player in the world,” Marina Mabrey said after tying Wilson’s record as per NBA Today. “To say that I’m in any record book with A’ja, I’m never living it down. She set a standard for our game that’s really hard to keep up to be honest. And to be in a conversation that she is in, it’s really an honor.”
She also tied the record for most three-pointers made in a single game, making it her second career game with 9 three-pointers. Her performance helped Toronto blow past the LA Sparks 125-97. Such highlight-worthy performances should make a case for Mabrey’s All-Star contention.
However, in the second round of fan voting, Marina Mabrey is well below the pecking order. Mabrey sits 26th with 126,977 as per WNBA.com. She sits below rookies like Olivia Miles and Azzi Fudd, as Aliyah Boston and Caitlin Clark lead the list.

The All-Star voting ends on June 27 at 11:59 p.m. ET. It will be interesting to see where Mabrey actually finishes after the voting ends, especially after her historic outing against the Sparks. Nevertheless, the performance has impressed the entire Toronto fanbase. A glimpse of how that translated during games was evident at Coca-Cola Coliseum on June 25.
Toronto Tempo Fans Are Already Shouting MVP Chants for Marina Mabrey
The WNBA All-Star will definitely be the icing on the cake for Marina Mabrey’s career season. But even if it doesn’t materialize eventually, it doesn’t take anything away from her because she’s already established herself as the Toronto Tempo’s franchise cornerstone.
We saw a glimpse of it against the LA Sparks when Mabrey was moving towards the locker room after her 53-point night. The entire Toronto crowd showered Mabrey with “MVP MVP” chants as a tribute. For Marina Mabrey, the MVP chants weren’t something she’d anticipated.
“To have them chanting ‘MVP’- I don’t think I ever imagined that, but it was a really good feeling,” Mabrey said as per the South Bend Tribune. “And then all my teammates celebrating me every quarter, every play – those are the moments I’m going to remember about this game more than anything.”
Mabrey’s performances clearly make a case for her as an MVP this season. But it will be important for her to maintain a similar level of consistency throughout the season to find herself in that conversation, along with other candidates like A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart.
Nevertheless, the season is far from over yet, and considering her momentum this season, everything is up for grabs for Marina Mabrey, including the touted All-Star honor.
