For the first time in years, the Sabally sisters shared the court at the Olympics. During the last two years of her sister’s collegiate career, Nyara Sabally suffered a knee injury, never really giving them a chance to play together. Now, again, the Olympics are over, and so is their collaboration on the court.

On August 23rd, the New York Liberty, void of Sabrina Ionescu’s skills, locked horns with the Dallas Wings for the second time. Amidst the team rivalry, for the Sabally sisters, it was also a battle against each other. With Nyara already securing a 94-74 win against the Wings, Satou had one last chance to change the one-sided outcome.

However, her team fell short, 71-79. Though she did win individual performance with 10 points and 7 rebounds while Nyara went 0 for 6 rebounds- performing below her current average of 3.4 points per contest.

Coming back to Satou, the Wings’ standout is known as a scoring machine, averaging an impressive 22 points per game this regular season. This means that despite a better performance than Nyara, Satou was underperforming. This could have been a major reason for the Dallas Wings’ loss today, especially when the outcome could have been different.

Liberty remains a standout

For their second game against the Wings, the Liberty played without their standout, Sabrina Ionescu. The 2024 Paris Olympics gold medalist was announced out of the game just an hour before it started. This happened due to a minor neck issue that she first noted in the game against the Las Vegas Aces.

Despite her absence, the Liberty gave a strong response to the Wings, thanks to impressive performances by Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart. While Stewart scored 19 points, Jones followed closely with 13 points and 13 rebounds. The other players on the roster were no less impressive. Kayla Thornton, who temporarily filled Ionescu’s spot, scored 16 points.

Leonie Fiebich, on the other hand, added seven assists to help the New York Liberty improve to 25-4. The August 22nd game between the Liberty and Dallas was quite a standout, especially as the Liberty recorded the WNBA’s best 25-4 record, while Dallas dropped to the worst in the league with 6-23.
