As much ‘all-fun-themed’ as this All-Star weekend was, Napheesa Collier hardly seemed to be on board. Her warning had come way too early if you ask us. “We’re taking you down,” she told Caitlin Clark after they were done drafting. So, not one for trash-talking following that, Phee let her jumper do all the screaming once the light hit. And her opposition captain’s high-spirited energy on the sideline? She seems to have used it as a fuel.

For all the soft play that overtook the game, Collier torched the box score like it owed her money. The Lynx star dropped a WNBA All-Star Game record with 36 points on 13-of-16 shooting. She led Team Collier to a 151-131 win, grabbed MVP honors, and took home a bonus check of $5,150… because why not make it a business trip too, right? All this after Caitlin Clark joked at halftime that Team Clark would listen to GloRilla and maybe grab a drink to turn things around.

As it turns out, Team Collier brought the beats, the buckets, and the bonus check. Clark laughed, and well, Collier cooked. “We were preparing to be on Stud Budz,” Collier laughed pre-game. “At the end of the day, we’re here for a fun weekend… it’s been really, really fun.” Sure. Just fun. And yet, Collier still brought more heat than the Arizona sun.

This was a matchup made for memes… Team Caitlin vs. Team Collier. The cool-headed captain against the record-breaker who’s been quietly carving defenses all season long. But the regular season and the draft had already told us what to expect.

If Phee leading the league with an average of 23.2 points wasn’t enough, her team was banking on synergy. 3 Lynx teammates, all 4 Lunar Owls, and a coach who knows how to win games. “That’s just going to be worse for Team Clark because now we got more chemistry on our side. We got more synergy. We know what we expect from each other,” she had said once the rosters their decided. And she doubled down once the MVP trophy was hers.

“I have amazing teammates. I mean, you guys see who’s here. Couldn’t do without them,” Collier declared, crediting her win to those by her side.

Meanwhile, Clark was classic Caitlin—self-aware, dryly funny, and playfully unserious about what was very obviously turning into a blowout. But don’t get it mixed, because her team still managed to score 131 points against Napheesa Collier. It’s just that the box score didn’t care. And maybe that’s okay. Because Caitlin Clark isn’t built to peak at All-Star Weekend.

What’s your perspective on:

Did Caitlin Clark's humor backfire, or did it fuel Napheesa Collier's record-breaking performance?

Collier talked with buckets, Caitlin with beats

She’s built for the long grind with 30-foot threes, 8.5-assist nights, every-night expectations. She draws defenders five feet beyond the arc, fills arenas, and sparks NBA-level viewership. And she’s still fighting the fight for her salary cap. She’s also in the middle of adjusting to her injury, and a whole lot of people either praising or doubting her every single move. That she could still laugh, shrug, and shine through the game she didn’t even play and lost? That’s a kind of win, too. But Collier… this was her night.

She knew where to be, how to hit, and when to take over. She looked like someone who’d had that clever comeback rehearsed not in words, but in footwork and fadeaway. This was, after all, the same Collier who’s been pushing into the WNBA MVP conversation all season with the Minnesota Lynx. She’s playing the best basketball of her life, and this night just happened to be the national stage where the vibe went from “nice player” to “yeah, she owns this now.”

Because while one captain brought the vibes, the other brought the vengeance. The WNBA couldn’t have scripted a better contrast. Collier, MVP. Clark, marketing queen. The game, a 151–131 fireworks show. And the message? Loud and clear: The W is deep, fun, and not afraid to mix mixtapes with mayhem. And maybe next year, Caitlin’s pep talk includes fewer bops and more buckets. Or maybe not.
