The Indiana Fever guard steps up for something bigger than wins. She announces her push for the Mark Mitchell Classic, a high school tournament honoring her late father. The tournament kicks off today, blending legacy with live action.
For those unaware, Mark Mitchell shaped Cincinnati basketball from the ground up, posting a 221–50 record over 11 seasons at Taft High School and capping that run with a dominant 25–1 Division III state title season in 2011. That run still defines Taft’s program today. Current athletic director Austin Gullett credits Mitchell for establishing the culture that continues to shape the program today.

Mitchell’s influence extended beyond high school. He assisted Ohio State’s women’s team from 2013 to 2018. Later, he led the men’s basketball team at NAIA Wilberforce University through 2024. And most importantly, he raised a fighter, a leader, a star like Kelsey, who still honors him every chance she gets.
Once again, Mitchell dropped an emotional Instagram message urging fans to show up, promoting the initiative. “If you loved my Pops, his passion for the game, and his love for seeing YOUTH STRIVE THRU HOOP, show up today and Monday! the legacy lives on…,” Fever star wrote on Instagram.

Eight teams will take the court for the inaugural Mark Mitchell Classic at Taft High School. The lineup features the host Taft Senators, Goshen, Oyler Madhatters, Seven Hills, Dayton’s Dunbar, Woodward, Shroder, and Western Hills. Fifth Third Bank steps in as the sponsor for this two-day showcase.

Action kicks off at noon on Day 1, with Oyler facing Seven Hills, followed by Taft vs. Goshen, which will include a halftime tribute to Taft’s 2011 championship team. Later, Dunbar clashes with Woodward at 4 p.m. For fans planning to attend, entry is cash only, concessions follow the same policy, and a clear bag policy will be enforced.

This setup reignites Mitchell’s connection to youth basketball. He turned Taft around after a decade of losing seasons, and even four years after his passing, the program still honors his impact.
But more than anywhere else, his legacy lives on through Kelsey Mitchell, who carries his lessons, passion, and love for the game.

Kelsey’s Resilience Mirrors Family Toughness
Kelsey Mitchell embodies that fighting spirit now. She overcame rhabdomyolysis during the 2025 WNBA playoffs. The scare struck in Game 5 against Las Vegas on September 30.
Symptoms hit fast with numbness and paralysis in her lower body for seconds. She left the court immediately for treatment. The 30-year-old guard called it a wake-up call. “I feel great… I think I just had a hopefully once-in-a-lifetime experience… I think I did play till the wheels fall off, literally, but I think it was just for the better cause of what the season was. I would do it all over again.”
