If you’re an Indiana Fever fan right now, you might already be counting down the days until the season ends. With Caitlin Clark nursing a left quadriceps injury, the Indiana Fever has dropped both games in her absence so far. But just when fans thought it couldn’t get any worse, the team’s point guard depth took a major hit. Sydney Colson and Sophie Cunningham both suffered contact injuries during the match against the Connecticut Sun, leaving the backcourt dangerously short-handed. Coach Stephanie White had little to share back then, but now she finally has an update to share.

The Indiana Fever’s season hasn’t exactly gone according to plan. After dropping three straight games, they’ve fallen to 2-4 to start the year. And to make matters worse, they’re now without three key guards, including Caitlin Clark. It’s fair to say the Fever are in the middle of a serious early-season storm. But there’s still some good news on the way.

According to Chloe Peterson of the IndyStar, head coach Stephanie White finally gave an update on the injuries to her two backup guards. The MRI results were encouraging for both Sydney Colson and Sophie Cunningham. Colson is dealing with an issue in her upper left leg, while Sophie Cunningham’s injury is tied to her right ankle, the same one that’s been giving her trouble since preseason.

“We got good news from both of their MRIs. As good of news as you can get,” White said. “So right now, it’s a day-to-day thing. We’re looking forward to hopefully them returning at some point sooner rather than later. But at the same time, it’s how each of them progresses in their rehab and in their return to the court action.”

Both Colson and Clark were spotted at practice this evening, though neither played an active role on the court. Instead, they spent most of their time on the sidelines, offering support and guidance to their teammates. Their presence alone is an encouraging sign. Perhaps a return could be closer than initially feared? We will have to wait and find out.

While that’s certainly a positive development, the Fever president has now confirmed that the team is actively exploring options to bring in reinforcements amidst the ongoing injury crisis. Let’s take a look at that!

Indiana Fever president issues encouraging update

Given the current injury crisis, the Fever are now expected to qualify for an emergency hardship contract. President Kelly Krauskopf confirmed on Sunday that the front office has already begun exploring potential signings, with hopes of bringing in a new player before their upcoming clash with the Washington Mystics on Tuesday.

“We’re down in numbers,” Krauskopf said. “But we’re looking at adding another player for a replacement player. Help us with our numbers and try to get people healthy and try to get a full roster back together. I mean, game are still coming, so it’s going to be an adjustment. But we have a good group. We have good depth. Thankfully, that should help us.”

Getting Clark, Colson, and Cunningham back on the floor will be crucial for the Fever, no doubt that. They’re central to what this team is trying to build. But with the backcourt so thin right now, adding an extra guard could make all the difference. The key will be finding someone who can step in and adapt fast to what the team needs. Will the Fever land that player in time? That’s the big question!
