The 2026 WNBA season proved that the Indiana Fever have the talent to compete for a championship, even though they fell to the Las Vegas Aces in the first round of the playoffs. One of their biggest shortcomings was their defensive struggles, an issue they will need to address next season. Indiana will want to keep its core intact while improving on that weakness, but retaining its foundation could prove just as challenging as strengthening it. With Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell forming the heart of the franchise, the Fever have an opportunity to remain contenders for years to come. The challenge, though, lies in navigating a delicate financial balancing act that has become even more pressing as Indiana undergoes a major front-office shake-up.

Team president Kelly Krauskopf stepped down on October 23, while general manager Amber Cox was fired later that same day, leaving the franchise searching for new leadership ahead of a crucial offseason. The incoming GM will inherit a roster with three key players whose futures come with significant financial considerations, making the task of keeping Indiana’s core together a major priority. So Fever insider Chloe Peterson has now highlighted the daunting challenges awaiting the franchise’s next leader.

“With the Fever’s championship window in full bloom, they need someone in the front office who will be able to take advantage of that. Indiana’s new GM should be someone who can, above all, navigate this salary cap situation they’re in,” Peterson said, as per an X post by IndyStar. “Aliyah Boston will make a supermax, which is 20% of the team’s salary cap, in 2027, and Caitlin Clark is eligible for a raise up to 17% of the team’s salary cap. Add in potentially re-signing Kelsey Mitchell, and they’re running out of space already. This new GM needs to figure out how to make it all work, either through trades, the draft, or smart free agency moves, including if they themselves want to retain Mitchell for 2027.”

“The new GM also needs to have a form of thick skin. There is a microscope around the Fever, especially, and that comes with more fans, detractors, and trolls. This new GM will need to be able to detach from that social media slop while also knowing how to maneuver the perception the Fever have built around the league. Pacers Sports and Entertainment, which is the organization that oversees both the Pacers and the Fever, are leading the search for the Fever’s new GM. They don’t have a set timeline, but a new front office leader should be in place by December to be ready for free agency in January,” she further added.

Aliyah Boston signed a four-year, $6.3 million extension ahead of the 2026 season. And the 24-year-old has certainly earned it. But her salary is set to rise to the supermax level in 2027, accounting for 20% of the team’s salary cap. That commitment gives the Fever some certainty about their frontcourt while limiting the flexibility available for other major contracts.

Caitlin Clark is also eligible for an extension under the WNBA’s Exceptional Performance Initial Contract (EPIC) provision. The star guard could receive a raise to 17% of the salary cap. Securing her long-term future would be a priority for any incoming GM, but the potential increase must be factored into the team’s broader roster plans.

Then there is Mitchell, who is entering unrestricted free agency after playing on a one-year, $1.4 million supermax contract in 2026. The veteran guard has established herself as one of Indiana’s most reliable scorers, and retaining her would preserve a key part of the team’s offensive identity.

If she leaves, Mitchell could earn a starting salary of approximately $1.34 million. But staying with the Fever could make her eligible for a supermax starting at around $1.58 million.

Losing any part of the three-headed monster could force the franchise to rethink how it operates at both ends of the floor. The new GM’s challenge will be to preserve the chemistry among the three stars while finding enough affordable talent to keep the roster competitive. Yet that will only be one part of the job.

Retaining the Big Three will not be enough on its own. Indiana also needs affordable contributors to address its defensive shortcomings, giving the new GM another challenge to navigate while working under the intense scrutiny that accompanies the franchise.

Caitlin Clark’s popularity has placed the Fever under an intense spotlight, meaning roster moves can quickly become subjects of widespread debate. So the next GM must be able to separate that outside noise from the decisions needed to build a winning team while understanding the perception Indiana has developed around the league.

With Pacers Sports & Entertainment leading the search for the franchise’s next general manager, the Fever are expected to secure a new leader in place ahead of January free agency.
