The Golden State Valkyries had plenty to celebrate after completing a sweep of the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA semifinals. But for Gabby Williams, the celebration came with a side of scare. A prank in the stands by an Aces mascot could have put her family member, who had simply come to cheer her on, in a rather dangerous situation.

It all started during Game 3 at Michelob ULTRA Arena on Friday. As the Aces’ mascot, BUCKET$, carried out a segment called “Unlucky Row,” he tossed buttered popcorn on spectators in the lower bowl. But this seemingly lighthearted act didn’t sit well with everyone. Not Gabby Williams’ sister, Kayla Williams, who was seated right there with her family.

Eyewitness footage shared by @_girltalk on X soon surfaced, showing Kayla visibly upset and confronting arena management about it. But while the viral clip captured her angry reaction, it showed only one side of the coin. There was more to the story, and Kayla later took to X to explain what had really happened.

Kayla Williams reveals the real reason behind her outburst

Kayla took to X to provide the missing context for why she reacted the way she did. And the reasoning simply changes the entire narrative of what many fans initially dismissed as nothing more than a fun, harmless prank.

“My daughter has a corn allergy and her scalp and eyes immediately started burning and itching,” Kayla revealed. “So honestly it was beyond throwing popcorn.”

This truly could have gone the other way in a matter of seconds. According to clinical data from the Allergy & Asthma Network, over 40% of children living with food allergies have experienced severe, life-threatening reactions. Direct contact with corn proteins like zein, depending on individual lgE sensitivity, can lead to everything from a burning sensation to hives and even airway constriction. Also, Kayla didn’t just address this concern.

She also questioned the decision to carry out the stunt in that particular section and even suggested that the organizers knew exactly what they were doing.

“N that section has been the visiting team family and friends section since 2018. To say they didn’t know what they were doing is a choice,” she added.

Fans, of course, didn’t take it lightly, with many questioning if this is how visiting player families are truly treated. Some didn’t understand why the mascot had to go this far to entertain the crowd. No one enjoys being slathered with greasy popcorn after all! Regardless, Kayla didn’t want this incident to overshadow the big day; being the proud sister she is, she brought the focus right back where to where it deserved.

“I appreciate yall. We’re good. Our other family n friends in that row are good. We’re in the finals,” she wrote.

She also explained why she felt the need to speak out, particularly after the viral clip focused so heavily on her angry reaction.

“This was unfortunate truly. But GSV is in the finals as a second year team. I needed to make sure people knew this wasn’t just me crashing out as much as that girl made it look.”

She has every reason to be proud because her sister and team just made history. Gabby Williams made sure the Valkyries had the last laugh on the court.

Gabby Williams and Valkyries make history with Aces sweep

The 30-year-old led Golden State to a statement 87-77 overtime win in front of the Aces’ home crowd to complete a semifinal sweep of the defending champions and book their first-ever trip to the WNBA Finals in just their second season.

A’ja Wilson and the Aces entered this game with a do-or-die situation on their hands, as another loss would have meant an end to their 2026 run. And for a while, Las Vegas appeared poised to extend the series after taking control in the first half. But a decisive 17-0 run in the third quarter from Golden State completely flipped the game.

The game ultimately went into overtime as neither team wanted to take their foot off the gas. However, in those final five minutes, the Valkyries completely pulled away with Williams scoring 8 points.

Kayla Thornton led Golden State with 18 points and nine rebounds; Gabby Williams added 16 points. Kiah Stokes also made her presence felt on both ends, finishing with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks as the Valkyries contained A’ja Wilson and limited the Aces’ options offensively.

The victory completed a 3-0 semifinal sweep for Golden State, sending the Valkyries to the WNBA Finals, where they will face the Atlanta Dream in a best-of-seven series. Atlanta also swept its semifinal matchup, eliminating the New York Liberty to reach the Finals for the first time since 2013. So with both teams arriving from an unbeaten postseason semifinal run, their championship showdown promises to be one worth watching.

Yet as the Valkyries prepare for their first-ever WNBA Finals appearance, the controversy surrounding Kayla Williams’ experience at the Aces’ home arena remains an unwelcome subplot to their historic run.

Golden State will now turn its attention to the Atlanta Dream, with Game 1 of the championship series scheduled for October 17. ESPN’s predictors give Gabby Williams and Co. a 62.8% chance of winning the opener, adding to the anticipation surrounding their Finals debut.

So after letting their performance do the talking in Las Vegas, the Valkyries will look to carry that momentum into the biggest series in franchise history.
