Life has never been easy for Olaf Lange and Sandy Brondello. But it’s been one heck of a ride. The couple first crossed paths in BTV 1846 Wuppertal, Germany. Brondello was a player at the time, while Lange was kick-starting his career as a young assistant coach on the same team. Sparks flew, they fell in love, and the rest is history. Years later, their paths converged as both coached at the New York Liberty, but now… they’re back to being rivals.

Olaf Lange has been appointed as the head coach of the German women’s national team, just a year before they host the World Cup. “I’m really excited and proud to take on this new role… It’s sort of a homecoming for me after so many years abroad, and I feel a deep connection to helping German basketball continue to grow,” Lange shared in a statement to AP.

Sandy Brondello’s husband spoke of a deep connection, and there certainly is one, because the 53-year-old held the same role from 2001 to 2003. He also coached the U20 unit (for both men’s and women’s teams) in 2003. Aside from being an accomplished coach, Lange pursued an education in sports science at Humboldt Universität in his hometown of Berlin from 1991 to 1995.

So, it’s a sort of comeback for him. But there’s another side too. With Sandy Brondello being the head coach of the Australian national team, the couple will probably face each other! Worse? He’d definitely know her coaching brain well, including her techniques. After all, Lange served on her staff at the Opals and Liberty.

In case you were wondering, this has happened before, and the power couple took it as a challenge. During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, when they were coaching separate teams, they decided not to live together. Naturally, this raised questions in the media, but Brondello clarified that it was simply a matter of “a little bit of professional integrity.”

Notably, Olaf Lange will be reuniting with 2024 WNBA champions Nyara Sabally and Leonie Fiebich. Not only that, but Phoenix Mercury star Satou Sabally will also be on the roster. “This group has real potential — a talented, hungry team that’s already taken big steps — and with the World Cup on home soil next year, the next three years present a tremendous opportunity to build something special,” he shared.

Germany advanced to the quarterfinals in their first-ever Olympic appearance after securing two wins in the group phase in 2024. But they lost to France. Now guided by a tenured head coach with years of experience under his belt, everybody is set to raise the bar for success even higher. But while Olaf Lange takes up his international role, what about his wife?

Sandy Brondello might land a WNBA job sooner than you think!

Brondello was let go just before the start of the offseason, following the NY team’s playoff exit. The decision drew widespread criticism because she had won the WNBA title just a year ago. Still, the Liberty’s GM stood firm, believing the move was necessary, leaving the fanbase confused about the controversial choice. Interestingly, though, Sandy Brondello might be hired soon, as reports suggest the Wings are leaning toward her candidacy as their next head coach.

The Dallas side had fired Chris Koclanes after they struggled with the worst record this season. And his exit occurred right after Brondello became available on the market. It appears to be a perfect match with Paige Bueckers, who’s already a superstar after her first season. However, keep in mind that the Seattle Storm, Portland Fire, and Toronto Tempo have vacancies too. Sources also suggest that she’s considered to be in the pool of finalists for the Toronto job.

Brondello, who’s been at the helm for some of the WNBA’s greatest players in Diana Taurasi, Nyara Sabally, Brittney Griner, Sabrina Ionescu, Breanna Stewart, and many more, could be guiding Bueckers within a few months. What’s your prediction?
