Who are Ruby Mae and Theo Josep? Meet Breanna Stewart and Marta Xargay’s kids

Stewart and Xargay’s relationship began during their stint with Dynamo Kursk in Russia. After years of dating, Stewart proposed in May 2021, and just a month later, they tied the knot in a rooftop ceremony on July 6, 2021. That same summer brought even bigger news. On August 9, 2021, their daughter Ruby Mae Stewart Xargay was born via surrogacy. Just one day after Stewart delivered a gold medal performance for Team USA at the Tokyo Olympics, finishing with 14 points and 14 rebounds in the final against Japan.

Two years later, their family grew again with the birth of their son. On October 25, 2023, Breanna and Marta welcomed baby boy Theo Josep Stewart Xargay, again born via surrogacy. “Welcome to the world, little man,” Stewart wrote on Instagram. “11 lbs., 12 oz. (your mama was a trooper).” The couple had first announced the pregnancy on Mother’s Day earlier that year, with Stewart revealing after the Liberty’s playoff exit that their baby boy would be arriving soon.

Inside Breanna Stewart and Marta Xargay’s relationship and family life

The couple’s bond was strengthened during a difficult chapter in Stewart’s career. In 2019, she tore her Achilles while playing overseas, an injury many believed could end her career. “It’s still a shock to me,” she admitted at the time. “I’m thankful that I have so many people in my corner to help me every step of the way. I’m feeling every emotion possible at this point, but just know that the bounce back will be real and I’ll be back better than ever.”

Xargay was right there through her surgery and grueling rehab. Their relationship deepened, and Stewart has said that her time recovering also sparked the decision to start a family through surrogacy. By May 2021, Stewart surprised Marta with a proposal during a hike in Phoenix, and a month later, they were married. Not long after, Ruby Mae joined the family, followed by Theo in 2023. Along the way, the couple has shared fun glimpses of parenting: like Stewart joking that she wanted to name Ruby ‘Tokyo’ after her Olympic run, but Marta vetoed it, suggesting instead they save the name for a dog.

“Why can’t I be the best player and also have a baby? But not carry a baby. You know, why can’t we do both?” Stewart once said.
