Cheryl Miller’s stance on Caitlin Clark appears to have softened dramatically following the latest developments surrounding the Fever star. Earlier this week, the WNBA icon openly criticized Clark’s visible frustration during the Indiana Fever’s game against the Portland Fire, suggesting that the situation had become disruptive. But after coach Stephanie White and even Clark’s recent comment on the issue, Miller appears to have reconsidered her position.

Instead of focusing on the outburst itself, she is now emphasizing the enormous pressure facing the young Fever star as she returns from injury and attempts to meet sky-high expectations. Miller shared this new perspective during WNBA Showtime, where she serves as an analyst alongside fellow Hall of Famer Sue Bird.
In a video that a fan account, Correlation, shared on X, Miller said: “I’ve got to say something about Caitlin. Sometimes I have to remember that she is young too. And the amount of pressure that is on this young lady, coming back from her injury, and living up to what everyone expects her to be and do, and whatnot, can be overwhelming. So Imma give her some grace.”
The incident that prompted all of this discussion occurred during a timeout in the second quarter of the Indiana Fever’s 100-84 loss to the Portland Fire. During the timeout huddle, Stephanie White was seen repeatedly pointing at Clark and slapping her knee to emphasize her coaching points. Caitlin Clark, who initially sat silently drinking water and looking away, eventually threw her hands up, stood up, and animatedly fired back at White’s instructions.
Reacting to that moment during NBC’s WNBA halftime coverage, Miller described the situation as frustration boiling over in a way that had become visible to everyone watching. In her exact words, “It’s one thing to have it behind closed doors, but (it’s another thing) when it spills over. And when the coach has to basically say ‘you know what Caitlin, enough is enough, this is too disruptive, in and out, take a seat.'”
The change in Cheryl Miller‘s tone comes as coach Stephanie White and even Caitlin Clark downplayed the significance of the issue. Speaking to reporters ahead of practice on Monday, White described the incident as nothing more than coaching.
“It’s coaching, it’s what it is. And I don’t often think it becomes an issue if you’re watching it in men’s sports,” she said. She also further dismissed any notion of tension between herself and Clark, adding, “My relationship with Caitlin is great. I love Caitlin. I ride with her. We have a great relationship.”
And that was the same sentiment that Caitlin Clark shared when commenting on the issue. As she said, “I think a lot of these things happen all the time. I ride for Steph. Steph has my back more than anybody. It’s just two people being competitive, two people that really want to win.”
And maybe the situation was truly blown out of proportion by the media. Miller herself admitted that she had been in similar situations before. But in her case, benefited from a level of scrutiny that Clark simply does not enjoy in today’s WNBA landscape.
As she said, “And she’s right about one thing I’ve been in situations like that before. It never played out publicly like this was, but I can understand where she’s coming from a little bit.”
Fellow Hall of Famer Sue Bird also alluded to that reality. “The camera hasn’t been on like the way it is now. I have stories on stories about moments like this, but the camera wasn’t on you,” she said.
Alas, the spotlight that comes with being one of the biggest stars in women’s basketball, though undoubtedly a blessing, can sometimes feel like a curse as well.
Caitlin Clark Shuts Down Stephanie White Speculation With Emotional Statement About Their Bond
The speculation of a rift between Caitlin Clark and Stephanie White has been flying around ever since their heated exchange during the Indiana Fever’s game against the Portland Fire. But that narrative sounds a little ridiculous to Clark, considering the kind of relationship she has shared with her head coach over the years.
Speaking ahead of team practice on Monday, Clark when asked about her relationship with White, gave a response that came from an emotional place.
“It’s great,” she said.”When I got hurt at the Connecticut game last year, like I bawled in Steph’s arms. That’s somebody I will ride for for the rest of my life.” But unfortunately for her, the public don’t see these moments. As she also said, “Those are the moments that people behind, you know, people don’t see that.”
And for Clark, it’s quite frustrating that people can reach conclusions based solely on the small, seemingly negative moments that make their way into the spotlight.
As she said, “People that just sit on their phones all day, they don’t see those moments. They don’t see the moments where we come in to work. They don’t see the moments that really absolutely suck that people have your back, but they think they know everything. In reality, they don’t they don’t have a clue.”
For Clark, however, these kinds of narratives are nothing new because she is no stranger to life in the spotlight. In fact, she’s accustomed to it by now. “It’s old,” she said, “but it’s the reality in the life that I’ve lived for the past 5 years. And it’s something I’m used to.”
Frankly, a rift between these two is definitely not a good thing for this Indiana Fever team who came into the season with championship ambitions. And so even if there’s one, it’ll be in the better interest of the team for them to fix it.
