When Stephanie White returned to Indiana to take the Fever’s reins this season, it felt like a “prodigal daughter” moment. This was White’s home territory after all. She had played for the Fever, served as an assistant coach, and led the team as head coach. So when she said, “I am incredibly proud and honored to return home to Indiana and lead the Fever during such a pivotal moment in this franchise’s history,” it carried weight. But reality crept in fast– homecoming quickly turned into damage control. And the latest game became yet another reminder of it.

After the biggest blow came on July 15, when Caitlin Clark exited with a right groin injury, Stephanie White saw three more of her guards moving to the sidelines. But the HC refused to fold. “You’ve got two options, right? You can fight or you can fold, and we aren’t folding,” she said. Indiana’s patchwork crew has since welcomed signings like Odyssey Sims, Shey Peddy, and even Kyra Lambert (briefly, before being waived). And then there’s Chloe Bibby, who earned a rest-of-season deal after a solid seven-day stint in late July. But only to sit out Friday’s game against Minnesota after feeling soreness in her left knee pregame.

“We don’t know anything, so hopefully we’ll get more information tomorrow when she can be seen,” White said. For Fever fans, this cycle of injuries has become so routine that it’s numbing. Something that isn’t routine, though, is seeing Indiana’s “big three” pop up together again, even if only by accident. And that’s exactly what happened when ION’s broadcast graphics went rogue-

Yep, don’t rub your eyes. Caitlin Clark hasn’t made a miraculous comeback and Sophie Cunningham’s MCL isn’t suddenly healed. Both are still firmly out. But there they were on the screen anyway. Caitlin Clark and Cunningham listed like ghosts of Fever past, slotted neatly alongside Kelsey Mitchell, Natasha Howard, and Odyssey Sims. For a second, it looked like Indiana had rolled out a full-strength, dream starting five. Sadly, it was nothing more than a broadcast blunder and a cruel tease for fans.

And perhaps that’s why the actual game hurt a little more. Indiana held the upper hand early, leading 27–22 after the first quarter. They still clung to a slim edge at halftime, 52–50. But then came the third quarter, where the bottom fell out. The Fever sputtered offensively while managing just 17 points, and Minnesota on the other hand, exploded for 32. What started like a controlled matchup, again fell apart in the second half and ended with a 5-point defeat for Indy. They are now 19-17 and in danger of moving down to seventh in the standings if Golden State beats Phoenix tonight…

With Chloe Bibby’s Absence, Fever Down to Nine

Now, while the left knee injury doesn’t seem to be a major one, Chloe Bibby being out further shortened an already thin rotation. The Fever were suddenly down to just nine healthy players for Friday’s game. This was a big drop for a team that was already bleeding depth. Before that news, Indiana was working with ten active players after Sophie Cunningham suffered a season-ending MCL tear. The timing couldn’t have been worse, and even the front office admitted that was the case.

Fever chief operating officer and general manager Amber Cox told reporters before the game that Indiana is actively looking to add help. Insider re-stated her words, “The Fever are definitely planning to sign a wing after tonight’s game.” However, the process is dictated by league rules. Cunningham has to miss at least one game before Indiana can tap into a third hardship waiver. It was a procedural hurdle that only added to the pressure.

The news traveled fast, and IndyStar reporter Chloe Peterson summed up the night on social media: “With Bibby’s late addition to the injury report, the Fever are down to nine available tonight. Amber Cox tells me the Fever are definitely planning to sign a wing after tonight’s game — they aren’t eligible for a third hardship until after Sophie Cunningham misses a game.” This was another clear announcement of Fever’s patchwork in progress.
