With a 79-72 loss against the Washington Mystics on Tuesday, the Chicago Sky fell to 3-8. It was a frustrating loss, considering they had the early lead before their offense stopped gunning forward. In the first quarter, Sky outscored their opponents 26-11 and also led by 17 points during a particular period in the game. However, they scored only 28 points in the second half, which ultimately allowed the Mystics to return for good and snatch away the victory.

Then, there was Sky’s Angel Reese, who went 7-of-13 from the field and scored 17 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. But she committed as many as seven turnovers. In fact, turnovers were their issue in this contest. The team had 25 of them, and that led to 40 points off turnovers for the Mystics, who also attempted nine more free throws. Understandably, Reese was irked!

During the Chicago Sky postgame interview, she said, “I mean, I know I’m trying to make great plays and I’m looking for the right pass and I’m trying to believe my guards and then try to get the open pass. I got to be better, and that’s on me. I’m going to take that with the turnovers because they scored 40 points off of our 25 turnovers, and seven of those were mine.” A bit later during the interview, a reporter asked her: “The team as a whole did a great job in that first half, but then leaks kind of tumbled in the second half. How disheartening is it when you see that effort isn’t being translated to wins?”

Reese responded: “I saw a little bit of the third quarter, and I was like, ‘We’re losing 50/50 balls, like we have to get those.’ They’re maximizing off of all of our turnovers, and we’re not maximizing off theirs because they definitely were turning over. We missed the rebound, or we missed the steal, or the second chance, and they scored on it every single time.

“And you don’t get that too often, like coming down to it, that last shot at the end where they got the rebound and got the offensive rebound and I take that personal … We tried to take it personal but we have to be better, like we can’t just look and just try to out jump everybody. We have to go in there and rebound.”

The Sky struggled with turnovers for major parts of the season, and though they showed improvement in their last two games, with 12 turnovers in each, it simply wasn’t enough to clash against Washington’s vigorous perimeter defense. However, Chicago is slowly closing the gap with the rest of the WNBA teams regarding this aspect (Sky’s 18.7 average before the Mystics game was just 1.6 more than 12th-placed Golden State).

And so Jeff Teague, Pike Head Basketball coach, had some advice for Reese. “She got to bring some of those turnovers down… I was watching some of her games, and if she brought the turnovers down, she’d be alright.”

What’s your perspective on:

Can Angel Reese turn her turnovers into triumphs, or is the Sky's season already doomed?

Have an interesting take?

Has Angel Reese been working on her shortcomings?

Well, turnovers are something the basketball player has been working on. In fact, before Tuesday’s debacle, Reese was managing the turnovers she would end the games with. For instance, during Chicago’s 78-66 win over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday, she had two turnovers. And during their 88-70 loss to the Atlanta Dream on June 13, she recorded only three turnovers.

However, coming back to Sky versus Mystics, the former’s turnovers were a self-inflicted wound. Despite the fact that they have tried to curtail the problem, they still commit the most turnovers in W. But on the same note, the Chicago Sky also couldn’t generate much value off 16 Mystics turnovers—just three points.

So while Angel Reese has accepted her limitations against the Mystics, she will need to course correct soon. She will need to keep the effort going as her team’s next home game is scheduled against the Phoenix Mercury on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. ET on ABC. “I’m gonna continue to try to get better every game,” she said during the press conference and it is time she deliver. What do you think?
