Angel Reese’s playoff celebrations have already attracted attention this postseason. After the Atlanta Dream eliminated the Washington Mystics in the first round, Reese caught flak for making a goodbye gesture towards their opponents, causing DeWanna Bonner to step in and stop her. Now, with a chance to advance to the WNBA semifinals, she has drawn attention for another moment against the New York Liberty bench.

It all happened during the first quarter of Game 3, with about 7:25 left on the clock. After Breanna Stewart missed a layup, Jordin Canada ran the ball up the field, looking to push the offense early, but as help defender Jonquel Jones stepped into her path from the corner, Reese, who was positioned in front of the Liberty bench, was left open. Canada passed her the ball, and after a moment to set her feet, Reese launched a three-pointer, increasing Atlanta’s lead to 8-2. Notably, as she moved back on defense, Reese made a three-fingered gesture pointed at the Liberty bench.
Then, about four minutes later, with 3:43 left on the clock, Reese found herself in a similar position. The Liberty had stifled the Dream’s offensive possession, and Jones left Reese open in the corner again. This time, with pressure mounting and just two seconds left on the shot clock when Reese caught the pass from Canada, she calmly took another shot and drilled it to extend the Atlanta lead to 17-12. Reese turned around to make another gesture right at the Liberty bench as she ran back on defense.
Both moments were captured on broadcast before being clipped and posted to X by Underdog WNBA.
In the first quarter, Reese logged 10 points on 4-for-8 shooting, including two triples. The Dream finished the quarter with a 25-18 lead, holding New York to poor shooting, with Jones being the only player hitting more than one field goal.
This is nothing new for Reese, who has been the key to Atlanta’s defense during this series. Game 1, which saw Atlanta walk away with a 92-82 win, was perhaps the greatest example of this, with the team forcing 21 turnovers and turning them into 32 points, tying the most points off turnovers recorded in a WNBA playoff game. Reese, who led this effort, logged four steals and three blocks. Even Liberty superstar Breanna Stewart, who finished with 19 points on 6-for-13 shooting, noted the impact of the turnovers in the postgame conference.
“Live ball turnovers [were the difference],” she said. “We couldn’t get a basket until pretty late in the third. We know what Atlanta likes to do. Similar situation to what happened to us at home [in the regular season] where they just came out and raced it down our throats. We need to be better.”
Then, in Game 2, Reese finished with a 23-point outing, but what mattered more was how many turnovers they forced. Atlanta forced New York into 16 turnovers, more than double their own mark of seven, and attempted 20 more shots for the night, which ended with an overtime period in which the Dream came out on top, 101-98. Reese spoke after the game, highlighting how proud she was of the group.
“I think we did a great job making sure that we were all on the connected stream,” Reese said. “We really stayed together and played together, and that’s how we won.”
Reese had a major highlight of her own that game, locking down Stewart, who had 35 points, during the final play of overtime, forcing a desperation heave from about half court.
Now, as the Dream looks to close out the Liberty to advance to the WNBA Finals, only time will tell if Reese can keep up her hot shooting.
