Looks like Trinity Rodman is finally back in business. Having been away in the first half of the NWSL season to nurse her injury, the USWNT forward returned in the second half of the season in no time, up and running. Today’s matchday 19 clash saw the Washington Spirit forward deliver a clinical performance, netting a brace to lead her side to a 2-0 shutout home victory over Seattle Reign. But more than her emphatic performance, it’s her post-match interview that is taking the spotlight.

Well, it had to, considering it was conducted by none other than Rodman’s boyfriend, Ben Shelton. The American tennis star, who is often supported by Trinity in the stands during his crucial tournaments, decided to make his way to Audi Field in support of his beloved girlfriend. Interestingly, while the obligatory post-game interview had to be given by Rodman, the CBS broadcast decided to hand the command to their “special guest” interviewer.
The glimpse of this interview was shared by NWSL on X, where Rodman and Shelton can be seen on one side of the field, wearing headphones. Of course, being interviewed by her own boyfriend was hysterical for Trin, who certainly couldn’t hold her laugh. One broadcaster began, “Ben, it’s your show now, you can take it over.” While adding, “What’s up guys, how are we doing?” and thanking the CBS studio, Shelton began the segment.

“First of all, I wanna say, great game, Trin. I got a couple of questions. First of all, two great combo goals today. It was really cool to see the assist. Can you talk about your dynamic with Croix Bethune, and how you guys play off with each other is really cool.” Though Ben was able to act professionally for his temporary interviewer job, Trinity couldn’t hold her emotions and kept laughing before finally regaining her composure to answer.
“Yeah, I think Croix is a very smart player. I don’t even really have to look at her for myself to know she’s gonna play me back, and she’s cheeky like that. I knew it was coming back to me…she’s a great player,” said the 22-year-old winger before again laughing at Shelton’s response, who said, “That’s awesome, that’s awesome. One last question, I’ll let you go.”

In his second ask, Ben Shelton turned the focus to the team, questioning Trinity Rodman about their struggles with injuries this season, the return of key players, and what her hopes and goals were for the squad moving forward into the playoffs. But before the Spirit forward could begin with her answer, she stopped, listening to what the CBS studio broadcaster had to say, which, we reckon, was something about how Ben might be on a spree to jinx the team’s form.
In order to clarify his question, the American tennis sensation replied, “No, no…nah, I’mma be the bigger man. I’m gonna keep it positive.” As the two laughed, Rodman continued saying, “I think there has been a lot of interchange with players, formations, and lineups. We’re still trying to get our group together. But it’s nice to have a healthy squad and to have a lot of attacking third so you can score a lot of goals and have fun.”
Hearing his girlfriend’s perfect response, Shelton awkwardly replied, “Well, thanks… thanks a lot. Guys, back to you,” before bursting into laughter alongside Rodman. As the interview ended, the two were in splits, with the CBS studio broadcaster thanking the adorable couple for the “Great segment.”
It indeed was, and quite entertaining and heartwarming, to be honest, as both certainly didn’t fail to showcase their fun side of the relationship.
Trinity Rodman knows how to cheer up Ben Shelton!
Yes, scoring two goals to help her team is one way. The other way is spending quality time together. The day before today’s NWSL game, Trinity Rodman came live on Instagram, where she was spotted playing cards. Interestingly, one moment saw the Newport Beach native accuse her boyfriend of cheating in the game, saying, “You’re just a natural born cheater.”
Quickly enough, Ben Shelton tried to defend himself, saying he had forgotten to explain one of the game’s rules. “Oh yeah, I forgot to explain that rule,” he admitted. Rodman disagreed, saying, “No, no, no, you didn’t explain it on purpose.” But Shelton insisted on clarifying the rule that if he plays 5, 6, 7, and she has an 8, she can play the 8 off his move.

“So you can play off me. That’s why I did it,” he said. Rodman, still confused, asked, “Then why did you put that down?” Shelton smiled and replied, “Because I’m playing off of you.” Well, we hope that’s decided. Then again, the talking point is to see these two having a great time with each other.
Not to mention, it was something quite necessary for Shelton, who just a few days ago witnessed his exit from the US Open. Victories in the first and second rounds of the men’s singles against Ignacio Buse and Pablo Carreño Busta, respectively, took him to the third round, where, unfortunately, while playing against French star Adrian Mannarino, he was forced to walk off the court in the fourth set after injuring the left side of his shoulder.

The pain had become so unbearable that his father, who is also his coach, Bryan, asked him to quit, seeing his rival take the win as Ben left the court in tears. This was the first time in his career that he had retired from a match. Tough break. But we hope now it’s a case of let bygones be bygones, as he certainly enjoyed the past couple of days with the best company he could have.
To be honest, we wouldn’t mind having Ben Shelton around, taking more interviews like this—don’t you think? Share your views in the comments below.
