During Game 1 of the 2025 Eastern Conference Second Round, Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Anthony Stolarz took a hit to the head after an accidental elbow from Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett. So, the incident happened right in the middle of the second period and they didn’t get any penalties.

Stolarz stayed in the game for a little while, but then he ended up vomiting on the bench and had to be taken to the hospital for a checkup. He got released the next day and showed up at the team’s facility, but they decided to rule him out for Game 2 since he was still on the mend. So, Joseph Woll took over as the starting goaltender while Stolarz was out.

Even though the Maple Leafs are up 2-0 in the series, the news about their goalie isn’t really what the NHL fans were hoping for. On X, Pierre LeBrun reported, “Leafs coach Craig Berube doesn’t think Anthony Stolarz will travel to Florida. Or at least not right away. No new update on him otherwise today from the coach.”

Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube mentioned that goaltender Anthony Stolarz is on the mend after the head injury he got in Game 1 against the Florida Panthers. Right now, there’s no timeline for when he might be back on the field. So, the coach mentioned that the goalie probably won’t be heading to Florida, and honestly, his chances of coming back for Round 2 don’t look too bright either.

So, how’s the goaltender holding up, really? “He’s recovering. He’s doing well. He’s fine,” Berube said, giving a clear update on Stolarz. So, how did the other goalie perform while Stolarz was out?

Taking responsibility for Anthony Stolarz

In Game 2 of the 2025 Eastern Conference Second Round, Joseph Woll stepped up in net for the Toronto Maple Leafs, filling in for the injured Anthony Stolarz with a calm and timely performance. Woll had a solid game, making 25 saves in the 4-3 win against the Florida Panthers. He really handled Florida’s offensive pressure well and came up with some key stops to help keep Toronto in the lead.

The goaltender stood out in the third period, especially when he stopped a big scoring chance from Mackie Samoskevich with less than 10 minutes to go, which helped keep the Maple Leafs’ slim lead intact.

Furthermore, his performance was appreciated by coach Craig Berube, who said, “Very calm and cool in the net. He made saves. Pucks were coming to the net all the time against Florida. He was on his toes. He was fighting through traffic and making the saves that were needed. Very impressed by him tonight.” Woll’s solid performance in goal really helped Toronto grab a 2-0 series lead, and now they’re heading to Florida for Game 3.
