He said, “I told our guys, it’s no different actually than what we do every day, I won’t say all day, but a lot of the time we spend is every day from a roster personnel availability standpoint, what do we need to get better, what could help us now, what could help us in the long run, what considerations do we need to entertain in order to just keep being aware and keep getting better.”

Zito mentioned that the current approach to evaluating the roster is now clearly centered around the gap left by their captain. He emphasized a realistic approach for the front office, saying, “So that process is already in place, can’t replace Sasha Barkov, but what options might be available, and the decision might be option A, option Q, option H, but you know what, we’re good, and maybe we watch and take some time, there’s no real answer, it’s a fluid exercise, but the consideration of anything and everything is in play and it always is.”

The Panthers are getting ready to share Barkov’s big responsibilities with the whole team on the ice. For sure, veterans like Sam Bennett, Sam Reinhart, and Brad Marchand need to step up. Even the newcomers need to make the effort if they’re serious about making that three-peat a reality. However, it seems like the coach is already on the lookout for someone to step in and fill Barkov’s shoes.
