When the Boston Bruins went on a trip to the White House in 2012, Brad Marchand was still a relatively unknown name outside the hockey community. And yet, when the then-POTUS Barack Obama called the winger a “little ball of hate,” it suddenly cemented the Canadian’s reputation as a supremely aggressive player. But the 37-year-old’s neighbors seem to know for a fact that Marchand’s on-ice persona is just a front he puts up to intimidate his opponents.

Over his 17 seasons in the NHL, Brad Marchand has created quite a name for himself as someone who loves a fair bit of scramble. His physical way of playing hockey has made him one of the most beloved yet disliked players in the league and beyond, the man is practically a paradox personified. But there’s more to the Panthers star than what meets the eye, as those living next door to him could attest.

In an X post by BeatinTheBookie.com from June 16, Marchand’s softer side has been revealed. “How good of a guy is Brad Marchand?” posits the social media update, evidently trying to evoke the fans’ sentiments about how the hockey player is known for his ruthless brand of hockey. But the subsequent sentences only counter the notion in the most heartwarming way possible.

“He lives across the street from a friend, the other day he had left his garage door open, my friend closed it for him and left him a ring message, he then returned the favor to him with free tickets for game 6 tomorrow night,” the X post notes, before hailing Marchand as a “Great guy”.

However, this wouldn’t be the first time that the Nova Scotia native had someone to verify his good nature. While he was voted as the League’s best and worst trash-talker by other players, Marchand’s involvement with the Boston community will hardly be forgotten either. In collaboration with the Bruins’ PR team, the winger used social media platforms to promote goodwill at every chance he got. And that’s not all.

In 2019, Marchand invited a fan into the Bruins’ locker room after the person couldn’t get to the rinkside on account of being restricted in a wheelchair. “He’s so genuine and kind and generous and very down to earth and easy to talk to. His off-ice persona could not be more different than his on-ice persona. He simply could not be any nicer,” the fan later recalled their interaction.

And yet, it’s safe to say that Marchand’s on-ice persona continues to be the more popular one. From being suspended for five games in 2018 for elbowing New Jersey forward Marcus Johansson to his controversial tryst with Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Callahan, the ex-Boston captain has produced many unforgettable moments on the ice. “He’s a heck of a hockey player,” admitted even Pat Verbeek, the OG “little ball of hate”.

But Marchand is giving the Florida Panthers all the reasons to smile in 2025.

The ex-Bruins star left behind his camp in Boston to transfer to Miami in March. It was, for understandable reasons, a tough thing for Marchand. And yet, the move did come with some silver lining. Upon arriving at the Panthers’ locker room, the veteran star discovered that Paul Maurice’s boys liked playing hockey just as aggressively as he did, and they hit it off instantly.

And the results have been showing. In 22 playoff games so far with the defending champions, Marchand already has racked up 20 points (10 goals, 10 assists), along with bagging several historic feats personally. From matching a six-decade-old record of scoring five goals in multiple Stanley Cup Finals to becoming the oldest player to score in the first three games of the Stanley Cup Final, Marchand’s resume has only gotten more elaborate during the short time he wore the Panthers’ jersey. And let’s not even go into how he’s been scintillating with all the clutch performances and OT goals to help defeat the Edmonton Oilers in the ultimate best-of-7 series this year!

It’s safe to say that Brad Marchand has become a fan favorite in Miami. So much so that even the Panthers’ GM, Bill Zito, had to note, “Brad’s a big moment guy.” And well, it does seem like that, thanks to Marchand, the Cats have also developed quite a taste for “Blizzard”. That’s one way of giving back to your colleagues, wouldn’t you agree?
