We’re excited to have her come in and help us continue to be elite in the back row.” – Former Head Coach John Cook on Keri Leimbach. Nebraska Volleyball is experiencing a surge of new energy, combining legacy with new ambition. With the retirement of the legendary John Cook, the focus now shifts to Dani Busboom Kelly, a former Husker great who is now the head coach, as she embarks on a new chapter for the program.

Nebraska’s freshmen: Rising stars

Nebraska’s fresh recruiting class is filled with new talent; it started with local standout Keri Leimbach, a tenacious libero from Lincoln. At just 5’4, Keri possesses the grit of a champion, having won four state titles and amassed over 2,000 digs. Her calm command on the court and explosive defensive instincts are well-known, and former coach John Cook praised her for keeping the Huskers’ elite in the back row. Keri is the type of leader who can deal with critical pressure in the Big Ten.

Meanwhile, Teraya Sigler, another electric player, is an outside hitter from Arizona with a powerful arm, but her resume is even more impressive. A six-rotation player who excelled with the U.S. Youth National Team combined her raw energy with her polished volleyball IQ. Sigler is the type of player who can dominate the net while also stabilizing the back row, which is unusual for someone so young in her career.

Conversely, Ryan Hunter presents a captivating tale of an underdog. She embarked on a journey from dancer to right-side threat—from a Charlotte native overcoming a serious injury to earning a spot in Lincoln. She is a rare combination of poise and fearlessness as a left-handed hitter who made a significant impact. Another key player, Campbell Flynn from Texas, stands 6’3″ and has the calm demeanor of a veteran. With her experience of multiple U.S. National Team Camps, she brings together her size, athleticism, and sound decision-making in a crucial defensive time. Her versatility and competitive spirit made her a powerful attacker, a foundation of Nebraska’s future. “We’ve been watching Campbell since she was 12 or 13 years old, and she’s always wanted to be a Husker.” Former coach Cook expressed her passion for being a Husker.

Nebraska will play its first game after the new wave on April 26 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, against Wichita State. The contest will be the team’s first game under Kelly’s leadership. Additionally, it is an excellent opportunity to experiment with rotation, integrate new talent, and build early momentum. Fans can expect a new dynamic on the court as several newcomers join the team. The match will serve as a valuable preview of what to expect in the highly anticipated 2025 season.

While South Dakota gets its first glimpse of new talent, a week later, on May 4, the Huskers will face Denver in a sold-out match at Ord High School’s gym, allowing Husker fans to experience elite volleyball matches. The growing reach of Nebraska volleyball year by year and the decision to host a spring match in Ord demonstrate the unique bond between the team and the entire state.
