In July 2023, Swedish swimmer Sarah Sjostrom etched her name in the history. The 30-year-old swimmer surpassed the G.O.A.T. of swimming, Michael Phelps medal tally at the 2023 World Aquatics championship. The four-time Olympian, after securing gold in the 50-meter freestyle event in Fukuoka waters, won her 21st medal in individual races.

Interestingly, following this staunch achievement, Sarah Sjostrom is currently gearing up for the Paris Olympics. In an interview, the swimmer who secured silver in Tokyo decoded her plans for the upcoming Olympics. The athlete also discussed her world record at the World Aquatics championship.

A swimmer who broke Michael Phelps’s record discusses her Paris Olympics plans

On October 16, World Aquatic posted a short interview video with the caption, “Sarah Sjostrom is getting ready for her 5th Olympic.” In the video, the athlete, while recalling her Olympic journey as she gears up for the upcoming Paris Olympics, stated, “It’s pretty cool that I am a part of the Olympics because I have done four Olympics, and I am training for my fifth one.” Winning the Olympics in 2016 and returning from my injury at the 21 Olympics in Tokyo was an amazing moment in my career.

Furthermore, while discussing everything she has started to appreciate after the injury, the 30-year-old swimmer also went candid about breaking the Michael Phelps record at the World Aquatics Championships. “That was amazing. That was one really cool moment. Also, I don’t take it for granted anymore. I know it can be the last time. I don’t know when. I really appreciate that I am able to swim the race and race the best in the world,” said Sjostrom after surpassing the G.O.A.T. of swimming in a medal tally.

Lastly, the athlete, showing her appreciation for swimming, added, “I am just trying to enjoy being an athlete. I think it’s not all about winning. Of course, those medals and moments are really important, but the most important part is everything around and to be able to do these kinds of  things.”

This video of Sjostrom comes after the athlete secured two golds for Sweden at the second leg of the Swimming World Cup. The athlete also surpassed Cate Campbell in a 50-meter event.

Sarah Sjostrom’s staunch wins in Greece

In the 50-meter freestyle event, Sjostrom stood atop the podium. The athlete surpassed her in-pool rivals by winning the event in 24.10. At the same time, Cate Campbell and Torri Huske had to settle for the second and third positions respectively by finishing the race in 24.54 and 24.62. Following this win, the swimmer clinched one more accolade in the 50-meter butterfly event. The athlete set a world record in the event, winning the race in 24.97.
