Alex Ovechkin’s epic conclusion to the Gr8 Chase marked a monumental moment in hockey history. As he inched closer to surpassing Gretzky’s 894 goals, he also attracted significant financial attention. Fans have been flocking to see him achieve the moment of pride, and this led to a massive surge in ticket prices.
Ticket prices skyrocketed as fans scrambled to see Ovechkin break the record. By Saturday afternoon, the tickets cost $274 on SeatGeek, $287 on StubHub, and $350 on TickPick. Lower-bowl seats were a whole different story—TickPick’s cheapest option was a hefty $626. Meanwhile, tickets for the Islanders’ next home game against the Rangers on Thursday were a modest $54 on SeatGeek. And if Ovechkin didn’t score? Prices for the Capitals’ home game against the Hurricanes on Thursday were already surging—$454 on SeatGeek, $434 on StubHub, and $547 on TickPick, with premium seats running into the thousands, as excerpted from Yahoo Sports.
TNT also reaped major benefits from Ovechkin’s historic milestone. While Ovechkin brought immense fortune to the table, with the high anticipation surrounding his record-breaking chase, TNT also witnessed a doubled viewership. It was tweeted on Twitter (X) and noted, “1.3 million viewers were tuned in to TNT/truTV on Sunday for Alex Ovechkin’s historic moment. Beyond his on-ice achievements, Ovechkin is also on a mission to serve a greater cause. While he remains the leading goal scorer in the NHL, his mission isn’t over there. His campaign, THE GR8 CHASE for Victory Over Cancer, continues to raise funds for pediatric cancer research through the V Foundation. It now stands at $120,000. Every goal that Ovi scores will trigger a personal donation equal to his career goal total, with Monumental Sports & Entertainment matching it, making each goal a savior of life.
