Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk had a memorable Four Nations Faceoff outing. From fights, to hits to chirps, the 27-year-old and his brother brought fire and intensity in spades. But while he had hoped to lift the trophy with the United States, he returned empty-handed. To make matters worse, he also sustained an injury that has kept him away from the action since the international tournament. Nonetheless, he is nearing a return, and Panthers’ head coach, Paul Maurice, provided a confident update about their star player.

Yesterday, the Panthers defeated the Utah Hockey Club 2-1 in a close encounter. Naturally with the playoffs barely a month away, he was asked about Tkachuk’s absence and his potential return during the post-game interview. Maurice said, “I think he was a guy that came back from the World Cup and- sorry the 4 Nations, and yeah I think those guys come back and they view themselves differently but he’s been very good.”

Meanwhile, the Panthers are hoping that Matthew Tkachuk gets fit in time for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He is a key member of the Panthers’ lineup and has already scored 57 points this season in the NHL. Additionally, the Panthers’ GM, Bill Zito, was also confident about Tkachuk’s return in time, saying, “We hope to get him back for the playoffs. We are still have projection, diagnosis and we have rehab. There is a course of action, but how and where and what manner of that progress from that rehab has yet to be determined.”

But when a key player goes down, it’s up to the rest of the team to step. And to the Panthers’ credit, it appears that they’ve been doing just that. One of these players is Sam Bennett who also recently opened up about how the team has been navigating Tkachuk’s spell on the sidelines

Sam Bennett speaks about Matthew Tkachuk and the gap they’re trying to fill

Despite Tkachuk’s absence after the international break, the Panthers have managed to win 9 of the 14 games played. As a result, they continue to lead the Atlantic Division, albeit just a point above the second-placed Maple Leafs.

An important aspect of the Panthers’ domination has been the contribution of players like Sam Bennett and Aleksander Barkov, who have stepped up to fill the void left by Matthew Tkachuk. During an interview, the former made an honest confession about playing without their star player.

He said, “That’s the way it goes. You’re going to be down important guys at important times of the year. In the playoffs, especially, there’s going to be times that you lose guys and it’s up to us to step up and every guy’s got to play a little harder, play a little bigger when we have those really important guys out of our lineup.”

It’s that kind of strong mentality that reveals why the Panthers lifted the Cup last year, and why they have an excellent chance of doing so again this year. Tkachuk’s presence is invaluable, no doubt but what the team can do in his absence shows the true strength of their mettle and resolve.

With the Panthers well-placed in the Stanley Cup Playoffs race, they would hope that Matthew Tkachuk gets back fit in time and can feature in the playoffs. Nonetheless, only time will tell if we can see him back in action this season.
