Everyone knows NHL fans are passionate and invested in the teams they love. It’s not difficult to find fans sharing strong opinions on every little aspect of the other team they support. Yet, how far would you go when your team is playing on TV but you can’t find the channel? Well, according to Edmonton’s emergency helpline operators, Edmonton Oilers fans don’t shy away from calling 911.

The Edmonton 911 operator made the revelation to CTV News. The news outlet reported that among the more “odd” calls 911 operators received last year were fans inquiring which channel they could watch the Oilers on. After the report, the Oilers themselves couldn’t resist appealing to fans not to call emergency services, asking about broadcast and scheduling.

“While we certainly appreciate that level of urgency & passion, please DO NOT CALL 911 to get the #Oilers schedule & broadcast info!” the official Edmonton Oilers handle posted on X. “We’ve got it for you right here,” added the team. They provided a link to the Oilers’ schedule page on their website, which has information one needs about upcoming (and past) Oilers games.

While this oddity from last year may sound amusing to read, there’s a good reason the Oilers amplified the news and street that fans shouldn’t call 911. The simplest way to put it would be such calls harm the availability and response times of emergency services like 911. Edmonton Police Service’s emergency communications director, Kay Anderson, agrees.

“It’s important for people to remember that every one of those 911 calls is taking away from what could be a real emergency,” said Anderson. This was especially apparent last year as operators dealt with over 1000 calls per day. While Anderson admitted to everyone getting “a chuckle” out of such calls, he discouraged such behavior.

Meanwhile, those looking for details on Oilers games have more options than just the team’s schedule page.

The one-stop shop to catch Edmonton Oilers games

While the link the Oilers provided on their X post has every detail for the team’s season clashes, another page gives viewers the same option. As every fan knows, Sportsnet has been the home for watching the Oilers in action for the longest time. However, it doesn’t end there; the dedicated Oilers page on Sportsnet.ca has everything you need to know about upcoming games.

Subscribers can easily watch live games and keep an eye on upcoming ones, just like the official schedules page. Those who may have missed certain games can even watch the previous clashes on demand. It’s a step up from the recap feature on the official page, which only shows the highlights, such as Conor McDavid’s successful return after the suspension.

However, there’s another crucial piece to knowing about Edmonton Oilers broadcasts. While Sportsnet continues to be the home to watch the action, the 2024-25 NHL season has seen Amazon get a slice of the pie. The streaming giant broadcast the first four Edmonton Oilers first of four Monday Night Hockey games during the ongoing season.

While it’s uncertain if this share will grow in the upcoming season, it’s certainly worth keeping an eye on when looking up where to watch Oilers games in the future, instead of calling emergency services.
