It was almost three months ago when owners imposed a lockout in Major League Baseball, many believed that baseball is not that profitable at all. And citing the same reason, the owners are still not ready to accept the players’ demands in the new collective bargaining agreement. But that is definitely the case for the Atlanta Braves.

Proving everyone wrong, a recent report suggests that despite the pandemic across the world, MLB franchise, Atlanta Braves, made a massive profit during the 2021 season. Notably, the Braves had one of their most successful seasons in 2021. They went on to win the World Series and the National League.

Earlier amidst the lockout in January, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, during his media address, had said that owning an MLB team is not profitable at all. But the recent data is just the opposite of his remarks.

“If you say that owning a baseball team is a good investment. You know, it’s interesting. We actually hired an investment banker to look at that very issue,” Manfred said. “If you look at the purchase price of franchises, the cash that’s put in during the period of ownership. And then what they’ve sold for historically, the return on those investments in below.”

However, recently, a report by ace journalist Eric Fisher suggests that investing in a baseball team is extremely profitable. Only during the 2021 season, the World Series winner, Atlanta Braves, make a total of $104 million profit. Meaning the Braves earned $6 million per game in the last season.

Taking this to Twitter, Jeff Passan of ESPN said that as a business, baseball is superb.

“Do not believe the lie that baseball teams are not extremely profitable ventures. They are. And the financials of the Atlanta Braves illustrate that. A $104 million profit in 2021. A $6 million-per-game revenue stream. As a business, baseball is superb,” tweeted Passan.

Not to forget, MLB is still in the lockout. And the owners and the players’ union are yet to agree to the new CBA Deal.
