According to Ojai Valley News, a meeting is scheduled to be held on November 19 at 6 p.m. at Kent Hall on the Ojai City Hall campus to talk about the program’s future. Jesse Austin, vice president of the Ojai Gymnastics Parents Group, initially requested 20 minutes to present their case during the meeting. Although the standard public comment period is three minutes, Mayor Betsy Stix agreed to allocate the group 10 minutes. Normal public comment time is 3 minutes. It is also conveyed that plans will not only be reviewed for gymnastics but also for all Ojai Recreation Department programs.

This meeting promises to be pivotal as it provides a platform for the community to express their concerns and for city officials to outline their revised proposals. Although Ojai City Council clarified that when the agenda of the meeting was fixed, the request for a presentation was not known. However, time is allotted considering the transparency and open dialogue with stakeholders in shaping the program’s direction. In response, city staff instead proposed alternative adjustments to address liability issues.

Ojai staff suggested other changes instead of the program cut

In response to public opposition to the proposed cuts to the City of Ojai’s gymnastics program, city officials are reconsidering their approach. The outcry of parents and staff underscored the program’s importance for children’s physical development. According to the staff report, the staff is recommending a few other changes instead of the cut.

The first recommendation is to continue the existing program for gymnastics in a status quo manner. However, all city support for travel gymnastics—including staff time, resources, or reimbursements—can be suspended, as can the prohibition of prohibited fundraising activities on city property for travel gymnastics.
