Jay Cutler gives his thoughts on carbs

In 2018, Jay Cutler appeared on the Mark Bell – Super Training Gym YouTube channel and answered a lot of questions regarding training and diet. While talking about his diet, Cutler said that he included 200 to 300 gm of carbohydrates with each of the two biggest meals of the day. Jay needed to lift heavy while working within the 10 to 12 repetitions range for each exercise, and carbohydrates were necessary.

“Everyone’s scared of carbs nowadays.”, said Jay. Cutler mentioned carbs are necessary because not only do they provide the body with energy but also give more fullness to the muscle. “Remember, I’m bodybuilding, so I’m looking for the roundest, fullest muscle tissue… You’re gonna get that through eating carbs.”, said Jay.

However, Cutler made sure not to overload on carbohydrates. The bodybuilding legend also mentioned that the trick is to stay relatively lean all year while eating the necessary amount of carbs. This is also why Cutler would get in competition-ready shape without having to crash diet.

The Arnold Classic winner also pointed out that to train optimally, one needs to remain healthy. Cutting out carbs entirely would not only cause problems in gaining size but may also cause health problems in the long run.

The first Olympia appearance

Jay Cutler’s first Olympia appearance didn’t go as planned. In fact, Cutler even thought about quitting the sport. Jay first stepped onto the Mr. Olympia stage in 1999. While the Arnold Classic winner was confident with his physique, Cutler placed 15th out of 16 contestants. However, by 2002, Jay had already improved his standing to second place.
