The news or fake news, if you may in this case, was that former NFL star Tom Brady‘s wife was apparently dating multimillionaire and founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin. Even though it seemed absurd, people still fell for the satire; which was originally published by a website devoted only to making parody news.

The retired fighter in discussion here is Ben Askren. The former welterweight, who stays quite active on the micro-blogging site, retweeted the news and wrote: “Tell me she ain’t in this for the money….”

And even the tweets responding to him appeared to have fallen prey to it. Although there definitely were a few who wondered if this really was the case, with some even trolling the retired fighter.

The original tweet, made by an account called ‘WhaleChart’, a page dedicated to crypto updates, claimed that Brady’s ex-wife Gisele Bundchen was reportedly seen together with Vitalik Buterin. The latter, known for co-founding Ethereum, is reported to have a massive net worth that goes into hundreds of millions.

Askren clearly didn’t seem too impressed with this news. But fans didn’t shy away from trolling him under the twitter thread.

On a little digging, it becomes quite clear that a website infamous for satire news had first printed the article; wherein this claim was first made. Upon a visit to the site – “The Bitcoin Bugle”, one can see multiple articles centered around crypto updates. But most importantly, they are all based on loose online rumors and blatant parody takes on the current crypto landscape.

What stands out is the site’s description in its about section, which many would find quite hilarious.

But in defense of Ben Askren and anyone else who fell prey to this news; one can definitely sympathize with them. With the pace at which news spreads nowadays; it is understandable that such errors do occur even to the best of individuals.
