Before joining the UFC, Sergei Pavlovich looked every bit like a force of nature. He tore through his first six opponents without letting any of them escape the opening round, eventually claiming the Fight Nights Global heavyweight title. After one successful title defense, he stepped onto the sport’s grandest stage – the UFC. But his debut didn’t mirror his earlier dominance, as Alistair Overeem stopped him in the first round. Pavlovich then went on a devastating run, tearing through six straight opponents with first-round knockouts, until Tom Aspinall handed him a taste of his own medicine in their interim title fight. Looking to rebound, Pavlovich instead ran into another setback when fellow Russian Alexander Volkov handed him his third career loss. However, Pavlovich, who turned 34 two weeks ago, regained his footing by scoring back-to-back wins over Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Waldo Cortes-Acosta. As he gears up to extend that streak against heavyweight contender Tallison Teixeira at UFC Macau, interest in the heavyweight contender’s personal life and background has renewed.

Dressed only in shorts while others wore insulated clothing, the Russian powerhouse immersed himself in icy water, showcasing both his faith and mental toughness. Pavlovich is also frequently seen wearing a cross necklace during weigh-ins, further reflecting his Christian faith. While he is best known for his knockout power inside the octagon, outside of it, his faith continues to serve as a guiding force in his life.
