There’s no denying that the undisputed heavyweight champion Jon Jones is nearing the end of his UFC run, having hinted at retirement multiple times in the recent past. For Joe Rogan, he’s finding it hard to comprehend that ‘Bones’, who has been a feature of Dana White‘s promotion for so long, will hang up his gloves one day. This has left UFC color commentator Joe Rogan perplexed about what lies ahead for Jones.

Jon Jones has a documented history of getting into trouble as UFC champion. But when it comes to fighting, it’s his opponents who find themselves in trouble against the consensus greatest of all time. Having been in combat sports since his teenage years (including this time as an amateur wrestler), Joe Rogan once mentioned that he couldn’t envision Jones leaving his fighting career behind for good.

“I’ve always wondered how does Jon Jones deal with retirement? Like, Jon is so wild,” Joe Rogan stated back in 2023 when veteran fighter Paul Felder appeared as the guest on ‘JRE MMA Show’. ” What is Jon going to do when it’s all done?” Furthermore, the 57-year-old recalled how after making his mark in the light heavyweight division, Jon Jones had the challenge of making a successful transition to a heavyweight fighter, which he did effortlessly. In fact, his fights against Ciryl Gane and Stipe Miocic proved that notion.

“For the last three years, Jon has been thinking, ‘Okay, I’m going to build up to become a heavyweight,” Joe Rogan added. “He goes into this extensive weightlifting program, obviously put in all this work to get so big, and really built himself up to be a legitimate heavyweight. And now, I mean, and also, Jon is what, 36 now?”

Jon Jones has given fans so many impressive performances that it’s hard to pinpoint which is the most memorable one. It can be his statement submission win over Lyoto Machida or it could be his 1st-round demolition of Ciryl Gane in his heavyweight debut. However, Joe Rogan had his favorite in mind, which proved his notion about Jon Jones being a ‘wild’ athlete.

Joe Rogan was left dumbfounded by Jon Jones’ careless tactics in his first title fight

Jon Jones has a record that could be a hard one for other fighters to break, which is being the youngest UFC champion in history. At 23 years old, ‘Bones’ went head-to-head against the menacing Mauricio Rua at UFC 128, when the Brazilian put his title up for grabs for the first time. ‘Shogun’ was already an established veteran in the game, but Jones didn’t seem to care much. He threw caution to the wind and with some unexpected attacking moves, surprised and baffled Joe Rogan, who was there delivering his commentary chops.

“You go back to Jon Jones’ first fight with Shogun, fighting for the world title… youngest guy ever to win the title,” Joe Rogan further stated. “He opens up against a legend with a flying knee. I mean, this is wild. Jon was just wild.” Since winning that title, Jon Jones has yet to lose a title fight in a legit manner because the only way he’s ever lost his title in his UFC career is due to certain violations outside the Octagon.
