Meaning behind Alexia Thainara’s nickname ‘Burguesinha’

The 29-year-old Strawweight fighter, born on November 20, 1995, in Paracambi, Brazil, hones her skills at Academia Ribas Family / Team LJ Combat. But what led her to pursue a career in MMA? Her journey into the sport is quite fascinating, and she shared the story in a conversation with the UFC.

While having a conversation with the media, Thainara said, “I started because of a social project at school in Capoeira and soccer, and through these sports I discovered MMA in a project near the school I was part of.”  Coming into the sport of blood, a humble background is essential when facing the best in the world. Thainara embodies this humility, with her nickname “Burguesinha” — meaning middle class — serving as a testament to her grounded nature.

If we were to substantiate her nickname further then we could say that it means middle-class people especially the people thought to have a strong interest in supporting traditional customs and values. Why did she choose this to be her nickname? It was her mother who gave her the nickname “Burguesinha,” which means “middle-class” or “bourgeois” in Portuguese, as a lighthearted jab at her vanity.

Explaining the story behind the name, she told the UFC, “My mom called me that because all I wanted to do was go to the gym and train, and she thought I was too vain.” Well, now that we know about her nickname, let us have a deeper look at her UFC career.
