International Fight Week has traditionally served as a showcase for the UFC’s most daring and exciting fights. From huge major events to standout performances, the summer spectacle rarely disappoints. And if the newest rumors are to be believed, Dana White and the UFC brass may have something spectacular in store for UFC 317. After a jaw-dropping knockout sent shockwaves through the lightweight division, discussion has turned to a potential showdown—one that fans didn’t expect but now can’t stop talking about.
So, who is part of the conversation? None other than Brazilian Mauricio Ruffy and seasoned fighter Beneil Dariush. According to Ruffy, Dana White is already looking into the matchup and working hard to make it happen. The only thing standing in the way? Dariush’s decision. “The UFC seems to like that matchup a lot,” Ruffy said in a recent interview. “All it comes down to now is Dariush accepting the fight.” The lightweight division may be stacked, but this matchup has all the makings for a fireworks display—experience vs. chaos, a calculated mind versus sheer unpredictability.
And if you saw UFC 313, you’ll understand why Ruffy’s name has suddenly become so popular. The Brazilian, nicknamed ‘One Shot,’ not only defeated Bobby Green but also flatlined him with a spinning heel kick that could already be the year’s best knockout. Even seasoned fighters like Daniel Cormier couldn’t help but sing its praises. The 27-year-old has quickly emerged as one of 2025’s breakout stars, riding the “Fighting Nerds” movement that has swept the UFC by storm. Now the question is whether ‘Benny’ is willing to be the gatekeeper—or risk becoming the next victim of Ruffy’s highlight reel.

Beneil Dariush’s next move is crucial. The former title challenger is coming off a disappointing stretch that included a canceled fight against Renato Moicano, which sapped his enthusiasm. Nonetheless, he’s made it clear that he’s looking for something meaningful—ideally, a rated opponent who will put him back in title contention. It is unclear whether Ruffy meets that criteria. However, in a sport that values bold moves, this could be the bout that changes everything for both men—if it is signed. However, it is worth noting that Islam Makhachev is looking for a new challenge, and he too had his eyes set on facing ‘Benny.’
Islam Makhachev will keep an eye on Dana White’s dream fight
If Dana White is successful in booking Dariush vs. Ruffy for UFC 317, the fight could have more implications than just rankings and buzz. The lightweight kingpin is watching from somewhere in Dagestan. Dariush was set to be a new challenge for Islam Makhachev, a fresh new challenge. Unfortunately, that could not happen, as that possible matchup fell through following UFC 289. Now, if Dariush can get back on track with a win in July, Makhachev may finally get what he wanted all along.

The champion made no secret that he was cheering for Dariush in the Charles Oliveira fight. “It would’ve been a new challenge for me,” he said during an Eagle FC event. There’s something unique about an eight-fight win streak, someone who has worked hard for a title shot without taking shortcuts or relying on media hype. The Dagestani valued that. However, with ‘Benny’ falling short and title defenses now centered on recognizable names such as Oliveira and Alexander Volkanovski, the champion’s enthusiasm has definitely waned. And that makes sense. Makhachev wants to leave a legacy like Khabib Nurmagomedov, rather than simply rematching opponents he knows how to beat. “Of course I want a new name on my resume,” he said.
What’s your perspective on:
Can Dariush handle Ruffy's unpredictability, or will he become another highlight reel victim?

“But if I don’t fight Oliveira now, everyone will say I’m avoiding him.” The frustration is subtle, but it is present. A fresh rival, like Beneil Dariush, rising again from adversity, may be able to revive the Dagestani’s spark—a final run of matchups that genuinely test him before he retires. So as UFC 317 approaches, don’t be shocked if Makhachev gets his sights set on that prospective fight. Not simply as a fan, but also as a man who hopes for a meaningful legacy fight. Because if Dariush defeats Ruffy in style, there may not be a greater candidate to challenge Islam’s reign before time runs out. What do you think?
