About a year ago, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone took to his YouTube channel to answer a bold question: ‘When is it okay to fight outside the UFC?’ He admitted he’d avoid bar fights, especially with drunk people getting too rowdy. But road rage? That’s a different story. Living in New Mexico, where highways are wide open but road rage incidents, often involving guns, are alarmingly common, Cerrone made it clear he wouldn’t think twice about defending himself or his family.

And now, a recent road rage encounter pushed him to share his experience directly with fans on Instagram. “I just think there needs to be repercussions for people that run their mouth in their trucks and flip you off and get all crazy and wild, said Donald Cerrone in a video he posted. Apparently, a driver misbehaved on the road while driving and showed some ungentlemanly gestures towards the UFC legend. So, he had to ask:

“I live in a small town out in the country. And I want to know, is the general sense with everybody else, when you throw your car into park and open your door, that is signing on the dotted line, correct, for everybody out there? So don’t think when I throw my car in park and open the door that there’s more to be said out in this situation, right?

“Just curious what everyone else thinks. I think that you should have to answer for what you say being on the computer, on the phone, in your truck. When you want to get wild and you want to get crazy, you should have to pay for the consequences that your mouth gets your a– in trouble.”

Then, he shared what he did in this particular situation. “I had a crazy guy driving wild, making gestures, going crazy. When we finally reached the light, I simply rolled my window down, and I said, ‘What are you trying to do?’ The only words I exchanged with the guy, he throws his car apart, opens his door. That, to me, is signing on the dotted line. Just curious what everybody else thinks. Let me know in the comments.”

Cerrone didn’t share what happened next. He may have retired years ago, but because he was a professional fighter, he knows how to defend himself.

I don’t need to explain what else happens in the story. I’m sure many of you could elaborate in your mind what goes on. But I just think it might be wise for people to just shut the f–k up in your car,” he ended it video. Now, Cerrone isn’t exactly new to such confrontations.

  1. Over the years, the former UFC star has found himself in a handful of other real-world altercations that mirrored his octagon intensity. Back in 2013, Cerrone was involved in a so-called ‘boat rage’ incident at Lake Granby, Colorado, where he was charged with third-degree assault following a dispute with another boater. He was later found not guilty, but the episode just spoke of his willingness to stand his ground outside the cage.
  2. In 2015, another incident took place, but Cerrone kept his calm. As per his own admission, he was punched in the face by an angry driver in a Whole Foods parking lot after a minor crossing dispute. True to his word about avoiding unnecessary escalation, he reportedly walked away without retaliating. He didn’t want more trouble after the boat rage incident.
  3. In another episode captured on video, the fighter was confronted at a gas station by a driver who accused Cerrone of cutting him off. The situation defused only when the man realized who he was dealing with: a UFC veteran.

The fans were having a field day while sharing their responses to Donald Cerrone. One fan, a native of Hawaii, claimed that fighting is pretty common in his region and that road altercations are a normal thing, especially when someone is in the kind of situation the 42-year-old was in. “In Hawaii perfectly normal to swing until the light turns green… get back in ur cars and keep it moving haha,” he wrote on Instagram.

Meanwhile, Michael Bisping and Chris Weidman, both former middleweight champions, had just one thing to say in response to Cerrone’s question: “Agreed.”

There was hardly anyone in the comments section who didn’t think that the driver who parked his car and came out of it to confront the UFC legend didn’t deserve a bit of physicality. In that regard, a fan wrote, “Definitely a green light for a dirt nap.”

Also, sometimes people get into an altercation without knowing what they’re really getting into. Highlighting Donald Cerrone’s UFC background, a fan commented, “He Picked the wrong cowboy.”

Sharing the same sentiment as ‘Cowboy’ when it comes to people stepping out of the car, an Instagram user said, “In Park, door open. Sounds like consent to me.”

Although Donald Cerrone did not share how it all ended, that didn’t stop fans from speculating. “Dude for sure just iced someone,” a fan added.

There have been several UFC fighters, including former champions, who’ve gotten into road rage incidents. So, do you agree with what Donald Cerrone thinks is the way to handle road altercations? Let us know in the comments section below.
