Mexican stars have always been at the heart of the UFC. Over the years, former champions like Brandon Moreno, Alexa Grasso, and ex-interim featherweight champ Yair Rodriguez have proudly carried the Mexican flag on the global MMA stage. Raul Rosas Jr. also made history as the youngest fighter to ever compete inside the octagon. Clearly, the Mexican talent pool keeps delivering for combat sports fans. Santiago Luna entered as a surprise addition to the San Antonio card. He went from competing at Tuff-N-Uff events to opening a main card on a night themed around his country’s Independence Day. Many doubted if he could handle the pressure, especially against a seasoned veteran like Quang Le, who held a solid 9-3 record. But the 21-year-old silenced critics, finishing his opponent in just 2 minutes and 48 seconds of the very first round.

Still, the victory wasn’t as straightforward as it looked. The Vietnamese veteran came out sharp and even rocked Luna with a clean head kick early. But the Mexican quickly shot for a takedown, buying enough time to recover. Moments later, they separated, and Luna regained his rhythm. From there, ‘Borderboy’ dropped Quang Le twice before sealing the win with a massive ground strike.

Santiago Luna opens up on his ecstatic UFC Noche debut

For many mixed martial artists, debuting at one of the UFC’s most coveted events is a dream. Santiago Luna, however, lived that dream just moments ago. Of course, that knockout didn’t come out of nowhere; it was the product of practice and perseverance. In his post-fight interview, Luna recalled, “I told him at the weigh-in that I was gonna knock him out and finish him in the first round.”

As spectacular as the finish looked, Luna revealed he had fully expected it to happen, crediting the team around him for preparing him for the moment. He said, “I know the level of fighters and coaches we have around me, so I had no doubt. Maybe I got caught a little bit, but that’s what Mexicans do, right? War!” Those are spirited words from the young Mexican fighter, but he didn’t stop there.
