Following a blockbuster UFC 314 event that saw UFC’s top stars make their mark, former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira is back in the spotlight. As the division heats up and contenders line up for their chance at glory, all eyes are on “Do Bronx” and what he’ll do next. Paddy Pimblett‘s statement victory over Michael Chandler, paired with Ilia Topuria‘s move up from featherweight, has stirred the pot. Fans are already anticipating thrilling matchups, but Oliveira’s next move may not meet those expectations.

In a recent interview with Portal do Vale Tudo, Charles Oliveira finally responded to the speculation. While he admires Pimblett and Topuria’s swift rise, he made it clear that he isn’t looking for popularity or attention—his focus is singular. “I’m looking for the title,” Oliveira said. “I don’t run away from anyone; I never have… But I’m going to set my own pace and my own game.” Despite Pimblett calling him out after UFC 314, the fighter from the favelas rejected the fight as premature, saying, “I’m not even thinking about that.” As for ‘El Matador,’ Oliveira admitted he’s open to a fight—but only if gold is on the line.

The Brazilian star reiterated his intention, pointing out that he has no interest in meaningless battles or remaining active solely for the sake of it. Oliveira believes the next phase in his journey must lead directly to a championship opportunity. Whether it’s an undisputed, interim, or symbolic BMF belt, he’s for gold. “If it’s for a belt, I’m in. What doesn’t make sense is fighting just to wait for the title. That’s not for me,” he said. It’s a stance that quietly closes the door on Paddy Pimblett for the time being, regardless of how much hype ‘The Baddy’ creates.

Ilia Topuria, who just abandoned his featherweight belt in pursuit of a second championship, has criticized Charles Oliveira’s previous losses and questioned his claim to contender status. Despite the uproar, ‘Do Bronx’ appears unconcerned, sticking to his plan with quiet confidence. While others compete for a place in a congested division, the fighter from the favelas is playing a different game—one that will only conclude with UFC gold around his waist once again. But while to him the idea seems like a good one, fans surely are not a big fan of it.

Fans root against Charles Oliveira’s master plan

While Charles Oliveira may be quietly confident in his ability to skip the line, the fans are skeptical of his self-created master plan. His decision to only fight for a title—or an interim title—has triggered a surge of criticism online, with many believing he has lost the right to dictate terms in the division. After all, he is the same fighter who was stopped by Islam Makhachev and is currently on a one-fight win streak. For fans, that simply isn’t enough. “Bro, you’re not getting a title shot after beating Michael Chandler 😂,” one user stated. Another user added, “Bro charles shouldnt be fighting for a belt he buns now😭😭” With him being on a one-fight win streak, it looked like a long stretch to a user, who reminded everyone, “One fight win streak btw.” Some even questioned his ability to keep up with the new wave: “Charles would get absolutely destroyed by Paddy or Ilia; he’s 35, keep in mind.” In short, they believe the old king has lost his throne—and possibly even his bite.

But it isn’t just about Oliveira. This new episode has rekindled criticism of the lightweight division as a whole. “This is the whiniest the lightweight division has ever been,” one user lamented. “What happened to the real men who would fight anyone at any time?” The anger was apparent: fighters were passed over, and no one was willing to prove themselves the hard way. “At this point, everyone wants to fight for the title but isn’t willing to face a contender,” another fan remarked, while others advocated for harsh measures: “Dana should start forcing the booking on the fighters now.” It’s a sentiment that’s grown louder with each stalled matchup—fans are tired of politics and clout chasing, and they’re starting to check out.

What’s your perspective on:

Has Charles Oliveira lost his edge, or is he right to demand a title shot now?

Have an interesting take?

Of course, in every storm, there are solutions. Some fans have moved on from the Charles Oliveira hype, advocating for clearer matchups and more deserving challengers. “Let’s announce Makhachev vs. Gaethje already for International Fight Week,” a user replied. Others suggested a possible pecking order: “Paddy should fight Max Holloway. The winner will face the winner of Charles/Topuria vs. Islam—or Charles vs. Topuria if Islam leaves.” And, in case anyone missed where the momentum is, a brutal take summed it up: “I’m convinced fans who want to see him and Justin fight for the title over Ilia or Arman are just forcing themselves to be different.” Despite Oliveira’s apparent clarity, the fans see chaos, and they’re making it obvious what they wish to see take place in the lightweight division. What do you think? Has Oliveira earned a shot at the title? Let us know in the comments.
