The steady stream of memes and subtle digs between Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall has clearly gripped the MMA world’s attention. Over the past few weeks, the two MMA giants have traded online jabs, fueling speculation and tension. The friction reached a boiling point when Tom Aspinall stepped in to face Ciryl Gane for his first title defense as the undisputed champion.
The bout at UFC 321 ended in the most unceremonious way when Ciryl Gane’s accidental eye poke halted the fight, resulting in a no-contest. The incident gave Jon Jones, who reportedly has his eyes on the White House card, enough fuel to take potshots at Tom Aspinall.

Jon Jones tears into Tom Aspinall’s technique
On the latest episode of the No Scripts podcast, Jon Jones decided to spill the tea on what many consider a sensitive subject: skills. Using the recent Ciryl Gane fight as an example, he minced no words in criticizing the Englishman for lacking the techniques worthy of a world champion. However, as expected, not all fans agreed with his assessment.
“I feel as Tom is a great athlete, but I do feel like he is a one-trick pony. I believe his wrestling and jiujitsu is incredibly overrated,” said Jon Jones in the footage. He added, “I got to learn a lot about his patterns in his last fight. Beautiful 1-2. But that’s really about it. He couldn’t touch Ciryl Gane at all. That’s the way I felt, like okay, Gane was just getting warmed up. Gane’s hands were down, he was shaking his shoulders, and he was bouncing around.”

According to Jones, although Aspinall is a top-class athlete, he remains a one-trick pony. To set the record straight, the fight in Abu Dhabi was shaping up to be a thrilling back-and-forth battle. Both Aspinall and Gane were landing heavy shots. Gane’s jabs bloodied Aspinall’s nose early, while Aspinall answered with powerful kicks to the head, body, and legs.

Fans clap back: “Come on, Jon, be honest!”
One fan went straight to the point: “Well, what was the problem fighting him then if he only has a good 1-2 🤷♂️ Watch Tom’s YouTube video; the father stated it was going into the later rounds way before the fight happened 😉.” Now that’s what it probably means—to hurt where it hurts most. Whether Jones actually ducked Aspinall remains a matter of speculation, but what the latter’s father claimed does sound convincing.
Another fan echoed a similar sentiment: “So why didn’t you fight him if he’s a one-trick pony?” Many wonder if reports about Jones turning down $30 million to fight Aspinall were true. And one user pointed this out directly: “One-trick pony that he ducked, played games with everybody, turned down 30 mil to fight, and then vacated his own belt lmao 😂.”
Still, some fans disagreed with that narrative: “Why y’all making out that Gane was whooping Aspinall? It was a close round up till the eye pokes.” Judging an unfinished fight based only on the first round does sound far-fetched.
Jones, however, found some support too. One user argued, “Ppl hate him so much, but he’s not wrong lol. Gane was definitely gonna win the round, and Tom’s nose was busted. We were gonna get to see his gas tank & it was going quick with him only throwing power shots.” Indeed, Gane had put the English heavyweight on the back foot while Aspinall tried to respond with quick counters. The eye poke ended it all. Maybe Aspinall would have rebounded; after all, that’s his belt on the line.
Aspinall’s fans may have to take Jones’ comments with a pinch of salt.
The former champion might be speaking from experience. Aspinall holds a jiu-jitsu black belt. But given his tilt toward striking – 12 KOs, professional boxing experience, and a renewed push for a future in the squared circle, many fans have likely started rewatching old tapes to see if Jones’ claims hold true.
